calum
calum exits his house for what seems like the thousandth time that day. moving is exhausting, he discovered. why is he even doing it in the first place?

oh yeah. because his parents don't really want him around. it's nothing they can change, they told him. it's just natural.

but it's not. parents always love their kids, even if they have a hard time showing it. or they just don't know what they're doing.

calum wants to talk. but he left behind his friends, he left behind his therapist, he left every one behind. he needs new friends, he needs a new therapist, he needs some one.

so when he walks out of his house and sees his new neighbour, lucas, who he doesn't think likes him very much, he can't help but say some thing.

"your flowers are pretty," he tells him.
luke looks flustered. "tha-.. thank you?"

"you're welcome. what are these?" he asks, pointing at a group of flowers. he
genuinely doesn't know and he genuinely wants to know.

"oh, those? those are begonias," luke responds.

"they're gorgeous. do you have a favourite?"

"favourite? uh... well, it's stupid, really, but i love marigolds."

calum's heart sinks because he actually forgot that he has no clue what marigolds look like? he's not sure why it would be 'really stupid.'

"...um... what ones are marigolds?"
luke grins. "right here."

he grinned! calum made him grin!

"i like your lip ring, too," calum says. and shit, why did he say that.

luke's face immediately colours. "oh.. um, thank you. my li- lip ring?"

calum feels the heat in his face, too. "yeah." oh, god, he's real. he's a real boy that he lives next to. "it's cool."

"..oh- yeah, thanks. th-.. thank you."
calum shakes his head subtly. he was so willing to talk about his flowers, why'd you have to go a compliment his stupid lip ring?

"so, uh.." luke says, and calum cannot believe he's going to start the conversation. but then he doesn't say any thing else.

"i think i need to properly introduce myself!" calum says ridiculously. he doesn't know why. he wants to talk to luke and to hear his voice again.

"uhh.. go ahead.."

"well, i'm calum thomas hood, i came from california. long move, right? not sure why i did it. glad i did, either way. any way, i'm eighteen, i enjoy kittens, sunsets, long walks on the be-"

"california?" luke asks, cutting him off. "what's it like there? is it nice?"

"california is a sight to behold. never been?" calum questions. every american has been in california.

still, luke shakes his head. "never."

"consider it. tell me about you," he directs.
"wait, but you weren't serious when you said about the sunsets. were you?"

"no," calum says and grins. luke's opening up. he's not a stuttering mess. "but i'd rather hear about you. neighbour."

"oh," luke mumbles and blushes. there's the initial luke that calum met. "well, i, uh- i like flowers. and music."

"music. excellent. do you sing? play any thing?" calum asks.

"um, i, uh... i sing, yeah, and i play- i play guitar?" luke mutters out messily.

calum's face lights up. "guitar? singing? i just met you luke-.. luke.. luke?"

"hemmings."

"i just met you, luke hemmings, but i love you," calum jokes, and he definitely doesn't expect the blush that comes after. luke shouldn't be blushing because of him.

"oh, well i.."

calum shakes his head and smiles. "i'll talk to you later."

he doesn't want to talk to luke hemmings
later, he wants to talk to him right now. but he doesn't know it.
