14.
Over the next couple of weeks Rozelle found that it was hard to
ignore Victor Ambrose because they sat directly across from each
other in class every day and his friendly banter was making it impossible not to like him.
She soon found that she could talk to him about anything, although she wasn't foolish enough to
totally trust him, because it was her experience that men only
wanted one thing...at any price and she wasn't willing to give that to Victor or any other man now that she was married.
One day after their class ended he waited while Rozelle stuffed her books
inside the Fendi backpack and they walked out of Mr.Yomata's classroom together.
"Do you like coffee?" He asked from out of the blue.
"Yes." Rozelle said, digging through her purse for her cell phone because she needed to call Sean.
Victor was watching her hands searching through the cluttered
purse and offered to hold her backpack while she continued looking for her phone.
"Thanks Victor." Rozelle said, flashing him a warm smile.
"So..would you like to get a coffee with me?"
"What'd you say?"
"I'm inviting you to get a coffee with me."
For a moment Rozelle stared at him with a distracted frown and then she asked,
"Would it be alright if I take a rain check on coffee with you today?"
"How about lunch then?" Victor asked hopefully.
They'd paused in the middle of the wide hall and several
students had to swerve around them to reach the exit, and noticing that they were impeding traffic
Victor took Rozelle's arm and gently lead her out of the way and through the exit doors where
they stepped onto the springy grass together and stopped again to continue their conversation.
"Lunch." He reminded her with a bright smile which crinkled the corners of his compelling brown eyes.
"I don't think so Victor." Rozelle said.
"Why not?"
"Shouldn't that be obvious?" Rozelle said, pointedly holding up her left hand, twiddling the
fingers so that her wedding ring sparkled in the noon sunlight.
The disappointment on his face was heartbreaking but she was determined to keep things between them strictly platonic.
Why couldn't he understand that it was dangerous for them to spend more time together outside of the school?
Besides Rozelle was having enough trouble dealing with the
guilt of liking him so much and it was becoming harder to look Sean in the eyes because of that.
"What does that have to do with two friends enjoying a cuppa together?" Victor asked. "Look, don't answer that question just think about it.
Okay?"
"Victor.." Rozelle began in a tone of mild rebuke but he waved at
her and walked away, leaving her to stare after his broad back in frustration.
