Chapter 1

You stared up at the cottage in despair. It was the stereotypical thatched roof cottage with the white walls framed with dark wood, and a patch of dying roses under the windows.

"Yes sir...I'm here, looking right at it..." you said with melancholy in your voice, a phone pressed to your ear.

"Good, there's some files on the kitchen table. It'll tell you everything you must do, investigation wise." Fletcher said on the other line,"Take care of the house, you have one month to come up with something. No more, no less."

"Yes sir, I'll do my best."

"We're gonna need more than your best (Last)."

The line went dead, and your shoulders slumped. Great, just great. You picked up your bags and made your way to the front door. You got this pressure on the back of your head as you dug in your pockets for the keys to the house. It felt like you were being watched. You brushed it off as nothing and fished in your pockets, unable to find the keys.

Shit, I hope I didn't leave them at home...

You sighed in relief when your fingers brushed against warm metal and the familiar jingling. You pulled out the keys and unlocked the door, when you were immediately hit with and unbearable rotting smell.

"Oh, god..." you coughed, covering your nose with the sleeve of your sweater. You stepped inside and placed your bags on the floor, shutting the door behind you with the heel of your foot.

You pulled your shirt line over your nose and walked into the kitchen. There was the file, just as Fletcher said. You opened it began to read.

"Let's see...eyewitnesses...Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, hmm..." you mumbled, your voice muffled by your shirt. You sighed and slapped the file down on the table,"Where the hell is that smell coming from?!"

You looked under the sink and almost fell backwards from the wave of eye stinging odor hitting you. You coughed and gagged.

"Holy Jesus..." you said, pulling out a plastic bag full of rotting fish bones,"Why?"

You tossed the bag out the back door and looked around for some air freshener. You finally found some in the cabinets and quickly sprayed the room raw.

"Phew, much better..." you said, looking around,"Now that I think about it, this place could use some tidying up."

You started off with removing the sheets from the furniture, then you vacuumed the cushions and swept the floors. While you were washing the dishes, the doorbell rang. You wiped your hands and walked over to the door, where a young man with shoulder length blonde hair stood. He had a kind smile and his intelligent blue eyes sparkled.

"Hello, you must be (Mr./Ms.)(Last), I'm Armin Arlert." he greeted.

"Please, call me (Name)," you smiled, shaking his hand. Wait, Armin Arlert, that name sounded familiar...

"Oh! You must be one of my witnesses." you said.

"Ah, y-yeah..." he said, pulling at his shirt collar nervously,"I've been wanting to talk to someone about it for a while...And I knew that you were coming into town today, so I thought I would come over myself."

"Well, sure, come on in, I'm not doing anything anyways." you said, opening the door for him.

"Thank you..." he said shyly as he walked inside and took off his coat.

You both sat down at the kitchen table and you pulled out your notepad and pen.

"Now, just relax and tell me what happened." you said softly.

Armin shifted in his seat,"Okay, well..."

I was walking past the lake on my way home from work, when a horrible smell hit me, like rotting fish or something. I tried to ignore it, but the smell was just so strong, it clogged my mind and made my eyes water. Then that's when I saw it. My vision was askew, so I went to rub my eyes of water. Then I bumped into something. Something hard, and scaly. And breathing. I looked up into the eyes of this creature, and my whole body was rigid in fear. Those golden eyes that held me in place and stared into my soul. They held some kind of...intelligence. Like he was smarter than any human. The creature reached out to touch me, and that's when I found my legs, and I ran back the way I came. It didn't chase after me, and when I looked back, it was gone from where it had just been standing.

You nodded and scribbled down what you could,"Okay. How tall was this creature?"

"Um, I think he was about six feet tall."

"Mm, smaller than Bigfoot, so we can scratch him off the list." you said, writing down more notes. You tapped your pen on your cheek,"Was it human like?"

"Yes, I believe so." he nodded.

You turned a page in your notebook and wrote stuff down, then clicked your pen,"Okay Armin, I'll talk to more witnesses and see what I can do about this."

"Thank you so much, I've been scared to even talk about this to anyone, its like that creature is still watching me..." Armin said with fear clouding his face.

You gave him a sympathetic smile and rubbed his shoulder for comfort,"Its okay, I know what it feels like to see a monster. Just go home and have a cup of tea. If you see anything else strange, give me a call."

You pulled out your business card and handed it to him. He nodded and thanked you again, making his leave. You sighed and read over your notes.

"Hm, interesting...usually humanoid creatures like this are extremely tall."

You closed your notebook and looked out the window. Tall and scaly, huh? Looks like you were dealing with some sort of reptilian. But what would a reptilian be doing in the forest? Well, yeah there's a lake nearby, but usually reptilians live in swampy areas. You rubbed your chin in thought.

"What are you...?" you asked.
