The Silent Prince.

There once was a silent prince, who's name he never uttered. Being the son of a king, you'd think he'd be exciting and open. Not this prince. He was quiet, reserved. He didn't talk to many other people, which he was fine with. Ever since he had to relocate to another part of his kingdom, he felt lonely. He left behind friends, memories. His new life in his new home was uninteresting, he'd say.

One day, he was sitting alone at a desk in his self-defense class. Sure, he had royal guards, but he still wanted to be able to defend himself in case something were to happen. He listened in closely on the lecture, only stopping to write down notes.

"Geez, the place is boring. I'd much rather be out in the stables with the horses." a voice spoke quietly to his left. He didn't turn to look, as the voice held an annoying tone.

"In the stables I feel.. Stable. Pfft-" the voice began to snicker at its pun. The prince rolled his eyes, still not looking.

"Still, you really shouldn't.. Horse around in the stables." it said before snickering again. The prince placed down his pencil, snapping his head up to look at who'd been annoying his learning. It was a female knight, with messy hair and eyes that shined with playfulness.

"Oops- I hope I didn't annoy  you too badly..!" she whisper-screamed, smiling nervously. The prince slowly smiled, and began to chuckle quietly.

"You're laughing? That's great! Laughing is great." she grinned.

"Why are you so obsessed with horse puns?" the prince asked quietly, surprising even himself.

"Oh, I'm not. It's just all I could think of. Anyways, my name's Katina, and you areeee?"  she asked quietly, outstretching her hand for a handshake.

"Prince Azak, future ruler of this kingdom." he said with a small bow in his seat. Katina's hand sat there, frozen in midair.

"P-..Prince? I've been talking to the prince?! I'm so sorry, your highness, please forgive me for talking out of line! I'll shut up." she said as she clamped a hand over her mouth. The prince laughed quietly, finding her sudden change of personality amusing.

"Miss Katina, I assure you that what you did was just fine. No one else here talks to me, so it's nice having a good laugh every now and again." he said as he sat up straight in his seat. Now that Katina studied him, she could notice his clothing. Gems, fancy fabric. Yep, he's definitely the prince.

"So, do you wanna hang out.. At theeee.. Stables..? Later..?" Katina asked quietly. She tapped her fingertips together, looking down. Despite being a knight, she didn't have many friends. And since she was talking to the literal PRINCE, she felt even more nervous.

"That sounds lovely. If you can find your way there after this class, I'll be happy to spend some time with you." he said with his usual soft smile.

"So.. Friends?" Katina said as she tilted her head.

    The prince nodded, "Friends."

Later, the knight was on her way to the stables. She was wearing her assigned tunic, carrying her shield and sword on her back. She entered the stables, laying her eyes on the prince. He was sitting down on a large pile of hay eating an apple, a few other snacks by his side. He patted the hay beside him, a silent invitation for Katina to sit.

She sat down, then picked up an apple herself, "Y'know, prince, you didn't have to do this. I'm really not worthy of your kindness-"

"Miss Katina, earlier we both became friends. Friends do kind things for one another." he said with a smile.

"Heh, I guess you're right. I'm pretty new here, and I haven't been a knight for long. Not many people think of me as a friend." she muttered. The prince looked at her and frowned. He'd felt some of the things she was feeling. He was also new here, and the feeling of loneliness was somewhat hard to deal with. All he could do was try and provide his support for her. Besides, she sought him out first. It was the least he could do.

"Well, if it means anything at all, I think of you as a friend." he said before taking another bite out of his apple. Katina blinked, taken aback. She giggled, taking a bite out of her apple as well. The two met there every day, eating lunch. Then, they started going places together. Katina grew as a knight, while Azak found himself growing stronger as a person. When the royal ceremony arrived, it was time for him to pick his official, trustworthy knight. It wasn't hard for him to choose, of course.

Katina was dubbed as the prince's official knight, and she was to always protect him until her death. It was mandatory that she had to follow him around, but she didn't mind. Spending time with her best friend was something she wouldn't trade for the world!

One day, the prince invited her out for lunch at their usual meeting place. She didn't think much of it until she arrived and saw the saddened look on the prince's face.

"Katina, I have upsetting news. With the new arrangements my father made, how much time we spend with one another might be limited. I want you to know that this isn't my doing, nd I'm terribly sorry that this is happening. Please understand that I still want you to be my best friend, and my official knight! We just have to wait until everything is settled, then we can begin to spend time with one another again."

Katina sighed and nodded, "I knew that this was going to happen, but don't worry, my prince! No matter what happens to us, I'm still your protector, and I'll never leave your side." she said with a grin, kneeling at his feet. The prince smiled, kneeling as well and pulling his knight into a hug. Even if they had different statuses, they were still the best of friends. Through hard-fought battles, dark times within their families, or romances that went sour, they relied on one another.

The prince and his knight, inseparable. The silent boy and the loud girl, friends til the end.
