Chapter 1)
The fire ate hungrily away at the house that had once stood so tall and proud. The air hung heavy with the acrid, choking stench of smoke. For Ira however the bitter smell held only the potent scent of photos, memories shared with her beloved aunt, books leafed through many times, tales of glorious adventures and heart warming romances burnt to worthless dust and ash, caught up in those ravenous flames. Tears sprung to her eyes as she remembered those happy innocent years; Then her aunt Jo once so distant and cold, now so treasured, groaned with pain and Ira rushed to support her arm, the reality of what was happening hitting her like broken glass, shattering her delusions; this could really be dangerous. It isn’t just a game anymore. This was dangerous. Real.
‘Ira...’, Jo croaked urgently, her voice cracked from the corrosive smoke, ‘Run, get away from here as quick as you can’
‘B-but?’ Ira’s mind was racing with horror and questions. ‘Why? And how will you be able to run with me when you’re injured?’
‘I can’t give you the answers myself, but you must leave me here and save yourself, don’t worry about me’ with seemingly huge effort, Jo mustered a weak, yet hopeful smile.
‘What’s going on? Why? I’m not leaving you!’
The thoughts and questions and terror swirled in her head as she looked about frantically as if searching for an explanation.
Suddenly a ferocious aura surrounded Ira and she looked at her aunt in horror; a single fierce screech pierced the smoky air, followed by the flapping of leathery wings. It all happened in slow motion. With her last breath Jo screamed for Ira to run and hearing the total desperation in Jo’s voice she did so; taking once last look back at her aunt being swallowed up by the black earth beneath her. Ira screamed. But she kept on running.
