Chapter Two

My circle of friends can be described pretty easily. Basically, I only have people I know of but none of them are friends. I’d known Casey for years but we aren’t close to being in a friendship, Mary, the girl who sits beside me in English, and I normally paired in class and talk comfortably but I would never spend my Friday afternoon with that girl. That status is repeated with every student at school then.

So, when I got to the chemistry lab and spotted my empty table that first day, I couldn’t stop myself from feeling relieved.

Somehow always ending with a class with an odd number of students, I’ve been having chemistry lab without a partner the entirety of my past high school years and I used that time to just relax from being force to socialize with other people and having to maintain the whole ‘I´m a totally normal and happy teenager’ attitude.

Sitting in the only empty table left, I started to pull the things out of my bag and laying them on top of it. My books and notebooks were naked and blank, waiting for me to write or doodle and sticking things on them.

Hearing the screech of a chair being pulled out, my head snapped in the direction of the seat next to me.

“Um, excuse me,” I said, trying to be polite, smiling and everything, “I think you’ve got the wrong table, look for your usual partner.”

Next to me a boy, a little out of place, looked pretty much awkward of being in that situation. His blue as fuck eyes were looking at me with confusion while he pulled his beanie further down his head.

“I don’t have a usual partner, I’m new here” he stated, making me almost want to punch myself in the face. Of course he was new, I’ve never seen him around and a guy like that would draw the attention of at least a quarter of the female population of the school. He was cute. Really cute. The beanie only let me see a small part of his blonde hair, but only with his eyes and tall complexion girls wouldn’t miss him at a party.

“Oh, then I guess you do go here, sorry,” I said, smiling sweetly at him since this meant we were going to be partners for the rest of the year. Bye, me time.

“I’m Luke,” He said while he took seat and started to pull his things out like myself right before he appeared. He had to roll occasionally the sleeve of his plaid shirt to keep them from going back to their original form.

“My name is Zelda, I guess now we are partners,” I answered, smiling friendly at him, even though I just wanted to ignore him for the rest of the year. I already missed not having a partner.

He looked confused at me before saying, “Zelda? Like The Legend?” I could see a kind of spark in his eyes.

I (fake) giggled, “Yeah, you could say so,” Oh, no, no that kind. The kind that always tried jokes with references to my name and shit. I can’t handle that kind.

I honestly didn’t mind the kid, not specially. While he kept his mind on himself and I kept it on my normal friendly way I had during school, I could make it through this class.

After class we parted without saying much, kind of awkward even, and I headed to my locker before the cafeteria. I actually didn’t have to leave many things being just the first day and the teachers only talked and discussed future schedules with the students.

Lunch was actually a funny thing. I didn’t have a group but I almost never sat alone, either I was invited or I tagged alone someone I didn’t hate that day. Even though I rather skip lunch by leaving the school I just couldn’t disappear every day.

Entering the cafeteria I debated with myself while doing the line. I could always sit with the golden ones but it seemed too clingy. Lana (a quite girl who sat next to me in History) and her friends were waving at me from a table at a side. But something cached my attention from a far table. Luke was sitting alone scrolling through his phone with some gross looking cafeteria food in his tray. Fuck it.
