ANDY
"Andy! You're going to be late!" My mom calls out in Chinese. "Come down and have breakfast." she continues.
I decide on a black cropped t-shirt that was just enough to cover my stomach and ripped denim jeans. I quickly head downstairs where I see the entire family enjoying breakfast.
"Mom, I'm heading out." I say but before I could take a step back, she immediately stops me.
"Nonsense. Have some breakfast before you leave. You'll need it to study." She stands and pulls me closer to the dining table.
"Mom, I'm cutting. I'm dieting for my cheerleading competition next week." I explain to her but my efforts go to no avail.
"Breakfast is important. You cannot skip." Her voice sparks up a little which is a sign that I need to follow her but before I could even concede to her, my grandfather decides that he, too, needed to lecture me this early.
"Didn't we already tell you to quit cheerleading?! You wear short short skirts. Very unethical! And you can get hurt! Why not join math clubs? That will help you get into good college." He speaks part by part. Grandfather's english isn't all that good but it's understandable. I know that whatever I have to say, it will end in a losing effort anyways so I just roll my eyes and eat my breakfast.
Few mouthfuls in, I was already filling full and bloated so I decide to say my goodbyes but as I head out to the door, my grandmother stops me. "What are you wearing?!" She exclaims. "Am I dead?" She asks sarcastically. In the Chinese culture, black is worn during funerals to symbolize mourning the dead, but to my grandmother, the color black should stay in funerals. "Change immediately!" She ends her speech. Mom cuts in and said, "Andy, we went shopping last week, didn't we? Use those." She says and proceeds to eat more of her breakfast.
I go back to my room and head towards the back of my closet where the paper bags from last week's shopping trip were at. I did not even bother to take a second glance since these were clothes that my mother would wear. Heck! These were appropriate to be worn by nuns. I decide to stash the clothes I was now wearing in my bag and change into a polo shirt and some slacks. I bid goodbye to my family and finally, I'm out the door.
School is only a 5 minute drive away but I had to make a pitstop before walking on campus. How could I show myself like this? I'd be a fool. I drive to the abandoned shed just at the back of school and change back into my clothes. I made my way back into my car and drive to school where my friends, Tanya and Brie were waiting for me.
"Gurl, what took you so long?" Tanya greets.
"Technical difficulties with the fam." I say and they both knew exactly what I was talking about.
We were about to make our way to class but then a familiar voice calls out "Babe!" It's my boyfriend, Jasper Smith, the most popular guy in campus. He gives me a peck on the lips and drapes his hand over my shoulders and altogether, we make our way to class.
Nothing much happened. It was a regular school day — numerous classes and lectures.
I was about to go home but before that, I made my way back to the abandoned shed to change to my "parent-approved" clothes before going back home.
