“Run!” yelled Silvia as I gape in awe and fear at the monster rumbling towards me. I come to my senses and bolt for the waiting crop-duster. The hideous beast pursues me. As Silvia and I pull the door firmly closed it stupidly slams straight into the door as it clicks shut. I can’t help but laugh. I man the controls while Silvia checks all the hatches as we gain lift off; the monster is howling with fury at losing its prey.

“That was to close Bruno.” sighed Silvia “What if it caught you? What would I do without you?”

“Relax Silvia there is no way it can get us up here” I am interrupted by a loud blaring noise from the cockpit; we exchange horrified glances. We both know what that dreadful racket means; it means that we are being followed! “Oh no” we moan in unison.

“What do we do, Bruno? I’m not good with stress; I haven’t been trained for situations like this!”

“Calm down, Silvia.” I sternly snap “It’s not the end of the world, we just need to shake it off our tail” I turn around as I convey this and gasp “It has wings!” We both goggle at the amazing but terrifying sight following us. For once Silvia was speechless. The monstrosity that was chasing us bellowed at us with a noise like thunder. Even as we watched it gained a few meters closer to the tail of our struggling air-craft.

I come to my wits first and make a dive for the auto-piloted controls. As I struggle with the stubborn throttle the small plane shakes aggressively and Silvia shrieks. The controls where un-responsive to my frantic tugging. “It must have shredded the rudder!” I yell over the wind “we need to jump, it’s our only chance.” Silvia nods slowly at this. I fasten on our parachutes as we painstakingly lose altitude. “Ready?”

“Just a second, where it is… Ahh got it!” she turns around holding a sack of supplies in her right hand and two hamburgers in the left hand. “You don’t need those” I gasp like a frustrated mother, nodding at the hamburgers.

“It would be a waste of space in our pack”

“We don’t know how long we will be in the jungle” Silvia argues “we could be there for weeks! We need to take as much food as we can fit”

I nervously glance at the quivering altimeter and to Silvia and back again. We don’t have time to argue over petty things, we are falling in a crop-duster from the sky for crying out loud! I don’t actually tell her this; but I want to. “Ok, but do it quick, we are dropping fast!” she hurriedly stuffs them into her sack and ties the sack to her belt.

“Ready now?” I question as we rip open the door. She nods. “GO!” I scream as we hurl ourselves out the hatch into open space.

I tear at the cord that releases my parachute from the bag; Silvia plummets past me screaming; her parachute not big enough for the combined weight of her and the sack. “I TOLD YOU!” I scream into the gale-force wind whilst crying with sorrow, regret and anger at her stubbornness. My only companion and friend is gone.
