Chapter 31

*2 weeks later*

"Hey, Brook." Adam smiles, when I let him in the house.

"Hey."

"What's new?"

"Nothing. Just been chilling around the house."

"How have you been holding up since what happened with Sean?"

"Good. I guess." I shrug.

He wraps an arm around me.

"I love you."

"Love you too." I say.

"Are you sure you're ok? It looks like something is bothering you."

I sigh.

"It's just. I don't know why Sean did that. It scared me. A lot."

"I know. Hopefully he realizes and learns from his mistakes."

I get off the couch and walk to the kitchen to grab a beer.

"Brook." He says, concerned.

"What? My dad's gone all the time. I always have a few."

"How much is a few?"

"Depends."

"Most in one day?"

"Five." 

I open up the can and a take a sip.

"Brook. I know it's hard right now, but that's the way life is." 

"I'm just scared, Adam. Scared if anyone's coming after me again."

"No one is. I won't let that happen." 

"I know you won't. But how would you know if you're asleep or if you happen to be there when that time comes, get killed?"

"I'd do anything to keep you safe,"

"Adam, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you died for me."

He just sits there in silence.

"Come here." 

I sit on the couch and rest my head on his shoulder.

"Don't worry. Nothing's going to happen." He says, before we decide to watch TV.
