Adelaide Fisher's face scrunched up at the laughter and whispers directed toward her. She kept walking, making her way to one of the many offices in the F.B.I. Acadamy. She was called upon by the Head of Special Operations, which was odd. It was oddly exciting and scary. Did they want her opinion on something or was something wrong? Was she in trouble?
"Hey, Scully!" Adelaide snapped from her thoughts' to divert her attention to the source of the ruckus. "Nice book!" He turned back to his friends laughing at how she had responded to being called Scully.
She had no idea what he was talking about, what book? Why was he calling her Scully? Were they referring to the X-files? Was there a resemblance she didn't see or something?
The further she walked the more people snickered and called her Scully. Something was definitely wrong. She kept thinking but had no idea where all this came from. Her day had been normal at the start and now? Not so much.
She stood outside the office door she had been directed to for a moment before finally knocking.
"Come in!" A deep voice greeted from the other side.
She stepped in cautiously and was greeted by Tom Manning "Agent Fisher, well- not yet." He chuckled as he stood to shake her hand.
Tom Manning was a familiar face even though she had never met him beforehand. Manning was on TV quite often, usually on the News when something seemed suspect.
"Sir, what did you call me for?" She asked placing her hands behind her back.
"Straight to the point, alright." He sat back down in his chair and pulled a book from a drawer. "This," he threw it on the desk in front of her. "was found in your dorm and brought to the attention of your superiors by your roommate."
THAT book.
That was what that one guy was referring to. It must have gotten passed around before being confiscated.
"Sir?"
"Sir is right, Miss Fisher. 'A book of the Supernatural'?"
"It's just a book I was writing, a hobby. Nothing more." She paused for a moment. "Is this going to affect my placement?"
"It is."
Adelaide lowered her head and prepared to hear the worst.
"However, not in the way you think." This got her attention back.
Manning leaned back in his chair flipping through her file for a moment. "Says you aspire to be in the Behavioral Science Unit. Bit out of your league, don't you think?"
"Sir?" She asked feeling her face heat up in anger.
"I have something a little better in mind, B.P.R.D."
"Which is, sir?" Adelaide was getting a little more than frustrated. She didn't like the pompous shit of a man. Was he getting ready to throw her away in some shitty lower-level part of the F.B.I. and deny her of her dream to work in the B.S.U. or what?
"Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense."
"Is this some room in the basement? Am I going to work with some crazy guy that believes in aliens?"
"What? No, this isn't X-files. Besides the B.P.R.D. doesn't deal with aliens, that's a different unit. No, no this is a real facility. A real line of work in the F.B.I. no matter how much we say it's not." He steepled his fingers. "We select agents for this section, you can't apply cause it 'doesn't' exist." He air quoted.
Adelaide didn't know what to say. Her book meant more than anything to her other than her potential here at the F.B.I. She wanted to believe, as cliche as it sounds, that these things existed and here this guy was telling her they did.
"I found," He paused to reach over the desk and take her book. "your research rather impressive. You have the lore, weaknesses and how to kill all these different creatures and beings. Impressive. Really I mean it." He went on as he flipped through it. "You don't belong in the B.S.U. There is something so much better and a little more up your alley here."
She listened carefully, Manning was not toying with her after all. He was being sincere and truthful. She had heard rumors that people joked about, something along the lines of there being some a unit just for spooky shit, mostly was joked about around Halloween when people dressed up as demons claiming they were Hellboy.
"How were you finding information for your research? I'm curious."
"I've spent an overwhelming amount of my time in libraries."
"Figures, your types always spend your time there. Look, Adelaide. This your best opportunity to do something great here. You're not suited for the B.S.U. Your grades aren't up to par for them. Please, I'm begging you."He clasped his hands together and shook them. "Take this job."
Without really thinking it over she gave him an answer. "Okay."
"I totally understan- wait. You're saying yes?"
"Yes, sir."
"Okay then. Everything is settled, I'll get started on the paperwork and find you a place over there." He said starting to gather her file and book.
"I want my book back." She held her hand out expecting to have it back.
"Not quite yet." He said clutching it to his chest along with her file. "There's a few people I'd like to show it to."
Adelaide lowered her hand and turned to leave.
"Oh, and Miss Fisher." She stopped in the doorway. "Be ready to leave as soon as graduation is over."
Author's Note:
