Dean's POV

It was around 4 a.m., and after finishing some research for Sam, I decided it was time to turn in for the night.

Cas had taken up the habit of going to be early, and he had gone up to bed a few hours earlier. It was a good thing though. He needed the sleep now that he was human.

I put the books back on the shelves of the library, deciding I no longer needed them and started to ascend the stairs toward my room. That's when I heard it.

Tiny, almost infant-like whimpers were coming from Cas's room. I poked my head in the door and saw Cas on the floor next to his bed.

His head was buried in his arms and knees, and he was obviously crying.

"Cas..?" I asked gingerly, not wanting to startle him.

He looked up from his position, his face wet and eyes red and puffy.

"Dean," he stated softly, clearly recognizing my voice.

"Yeah, it's me ba- uh, Cas. What's wrong?"

"M-m-my w-w-w-wings," he managed to breathe out in between sobs.

"Your wings?" I asked, confused.

"Th-th-they're g-gone!" Cas exclaimed, once again between sobs.

"I know, Cas. I know," I said.

I moved farther into the room and sat down on the floor next to him. He just looked so sad. I reached over and put my hand on top of his and wrapped my other arm around his shoulder, and he collapsed into my arms.

He laid his head in my lap and clutched onto my sweatpants, crying harder. I carded my now-free hand through his hair, quietly shushing him and whispering reassuring words.

After about 30 minutes, he had calmed down enough that I thought I might be able to coax him back into bed.

"Cas? C'mon buddy let's get you up and into bed, yeah? It's more comfortable than the floor. C'mon," I said, nudging him slightly.

I sighed, realizing that he was asleep.

"Oh boy," I half-whispered, trying to get out from underneath him.

"Don't go," Cas mumbled sleepily, gripping my pants even tighter.

"I'm not, baby, I'm just trying to get you into bed."

Cas seemed to be drifting back to sleep, but the realization of what I had said dawned upon me, and I felt my face flush.

I was eventually able to get out from underneath him, looking down at his sleeping form. He looked so peaceful.

I leaned down to pick him up, and placed him on his bed, giving is hand a squeeze and turning to leave.

That's when I felt his hand reach out and grab mine and pull me back to him. I landed almost directly on top of him, reaching out to try to catch me from actually crushing him.

I tried to stand up again, thinking he hadn't meant to pull on my hand, especially not that hard, but he pulled me again. This time, I successfully landed horizontally across his stomach.

I heard Cas sigh in contentment and he snuggled further into his pillow.

I exhaled sharply, knowing I wasn't going to get out of this, so instead, I moved so I was positioned vertically next to him. I received several moans and groans of protest during this process, but he eventually realized what I was doing.

Once I was comfortable, I pulled the blanket up over us both, lifting my arm in the process, ready to drape it over Cas's waist so he'd know I was still there.

Cas beat me to it by scooting over until he was impossibly close and burying his head in my chest.

I smiled softly to myself, looking down at the adorable man that was now sound asleep snuggled into me. I wrapped my arms protectively around his waist, relishing in the warmth he was giving off.

Not long after. Cas started writhing around in his sleep. I gripped him tighter, trying to remind him that I was still there and I would protect him.

After a moment, nothing seemed to be working. Shushing him, holding him, telling him it was okay, none of it. I thought hard to myself, and came to a slightly risky conclusion.

I tried to shake him awake gently, and he eventually stopped writhing and opened his eyes.

'Here goes nothing' I thought.

I leaned in and gently captured his lips with mine. He kissed back almost immediately, applying even more force into the kiss. I was the first to pull away, not wanting it to go too far.

I rested my forehead against his, looking into his eyes, still bloodshot from earlier.

I chuckled lightly in disbelief, and then leaned in to kiss him, smiling widely into the kiss.

I was overwhelmed with happiness that the person that I had loved for so long was here, in front of me, accepting and returning my kiss.

"I love you so much, Cas."

"You have no idea."

We spent the rest of that night in each others' arms, sharing sweet kisses and loving each other.

It was easily the best night of my life.
