Diving Headfirst (Makoto x Reader)

Chapter 10

Me, Haru, Toshi, and Makoto walked back together. We talked, but Tosh and Haru got into a fight again so me and Makoto had to break them up. Now I see why Toshi and Haru should not be near each other.

Eventually, we walked to Haru's house and left then Tosh started to walk to her house and it was just me and Makoto. For a while no one said anything. I checked my phone to see if I had gotten any new messages.

"Have you decided what you are going to do for the competition?" He asked.

"Ummm probably nothing I'll just cheer you guys on from the side," I said. "What about you?"

"I'm doing backstroke and relay. You should really do something it's your last year."

"They have relay?" I say curiously.

"Yeah, it involves all the swim types."

"Oh, I want to do relay... then at least all eyes wouldn't be on me."

"You need 3 more people though."

"Yeah I know I don't know who would..."

"I don't know either... I'm sorry we already have our 4."

"Nah I get it."

Then I looked at the ocean we were walking beside. I normally always stopped there for a minute to look.

"You wanna stop and look at the ocean a bit?" I say casually.

"Yeah uh I guess..." he sounded super unsure.

I didn't want to force him to stay but I figured if he really didn't want to stay he could just leave. I stood right at the edge, but Makoto seemed to stay farther away.

I sat down at the ledge but he still didn't come any closer. Does he not like me? He probably was trying to be nice to me before. I guess we must not really be friends. What did I expect though we had barely talked to each other before?

I wonder if I'm coming across like Tosh did when I first met her? Maybe I should just tell him he can go ahead if he wants. No that might make it way more awkward.

"Hey (y/n) can I ask you something?" I jumped a little because I was caught so off guard.

"Ahh yeah..." I say hoping he didn't notice my reaction.

"Umm this isn't it, but why did you just flinch?" He said laughing.

"Haha yeah, it scared me I was getting used to the silence."

"Oh." He said laughing a little.

"So what did you want to ask?" To be honest I'm just impatient and I hate not knowing.

"Oh, right I was wondering what you planned to do after high school. A friend had asked me yesterday and honestly, I have no idea."

"Same here," I say still looking at the ocean. "Right now my life is a little unpredictable. I don't even know if I'll still be in Japan next year."

"But that doesn't mean you don't have any dreams."

"I guess I haven't really thought very far ahead. Plus dreams never really come true. I'd rather just kill my hopes now because I know nothing ever seems to work out."

Congratulations on making it awkward I thought. I always overshare! I just made this conversation really depressing.

"You never know unless you try. You may fail but at least you'll know, otherwise what's the point in even waking up if you have no ambitions."

He's kind of right I guess I've just kind of woken up and hardly ever do anything but what I'm told to, besides the few compulsive decisions I've made. I guess they got me this far. Maybe I should just live life a little more compulsive.

"I want to do a relay and I want to do 100m freestyle and I'm going to win," I said jumping up.

Makoto looked surprised.

"I'm glad you are going to participate and all, but how are you going to do the relay you need three more people?"

"Guess how many friends I have?"

"One..."

"No! I have more than one friend! Jeez, I have 3 dummy! Otherwise, why would I say that?! And before you say that 3 is still kind of sad, I'm new!" I say embarrassed.

"Sorry I guess that was kind of dumb to say." He said laughing.

Oh crap I hope Tosh doesn't find out I yelled at him otherwise I'm going to have to get a big speech about how perfect he is. Honestly, he's nice and all but I don't get all the hype.
