janelle smith and josé martinez are the parents of lani's mother helen martinez. kim hyelin and chris edwards are the parents of lani's father michael edwards. lani's parents both met in middle school, in 7th grade. they became the best of friends, until they realized they had feelings for each other. as they took 9th grade together, they began to date. as they grew into adults, they decided to have a family. in 1991, the 20 and 19 year old had their first child. thus creating, joseph j. edwards. about 7 years later, the couple gave birth to a beautiful daughter. leilani orona edwards. time went by fast and in 2008, the now 37 and 36 year olds gave birth to their last child. sierra l. edwards.
