"You will do great things, my son," she cooed at the tiny infant who held a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Yes he will," another voice chimed in behind her, considerable deeper than the nurse's who had just been in the room with her. Esperanza turned and saw the father of her child, Hephaestus standing in the shadows of the room, watching her. She gave him a small smile.

"It will not be an easy life," she mused, "it will be one that will test his fate and force him to grow up much sooner than anyone would like." Hephaestus nodded solemnly.

"Fear not, Esperanza. I will watch him from afar... especially if you are (gods forbid) unable to one day," he gave her a soft smile, though her expression was more foreboding.

"Do you swear it?"

"I swear on the River Styx to keep that promise to you, my love."

Then, he was gone.

"Mamá!"

A scared little boy is running through a fire.

"Mamí! Donde estás?"

A scream, a woman.

Then black.

"Oh my gods," Reyna covered her mouth is shock.
The Stolls nodded solemnly, their humor forgotten.

— time skip two years —

"Diablo! Get out of my house! You niño diablo are no longer welcome here!" A mean older Hispanic lady was yelling at a young Leo. The boy looked worse for wear and he was about to have nothing. But he seemed accepting, resigned to his fate.

"Don't worry tía. When I get to el infierno, I'll put in a good word for you." And then he walked away into the night as his aunt sputtered Spanish curses after him.
