TW: homophobia and homophobic slurs
I take Thomas's hand, carrying Emma on my hip. Thomas leans down to kiss both of our foreheads and I giggle softly, smiling as Emma giggles happily.
"Dada," Emma grins, pointing to me.
I smile widely and look up at Thomas, who's grinning as well.
Emma smiles up at us, her eyes sparkling.
"I still can't believe we're getting married!" I squeal, looking up at Thomas.
"Yes, hun. You've been excited for the past month," he laughs softly.
"But like... We're actually doing the stuff now! Like inviting people and figuring out the venue and choosing the bakery and cake and it's all so amazing!" I smile widely.
"I gotta say, the cake is the best part," he grins, referring to the fact that we've arrived at the bakery.
We step inside, smiling at the scent of fresh baked bread and pastries. I look at Emma, who's curiously looking around at the bakery, gurgling happily. She lets out a small "ooh" and I giggle softly.
A young woman greets us from behind the counter and I smile softly.
"We're looking for a wedding cake an-"
"A wedding cake?" She raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah.. a wedding cake... This is a bakery, right?" I laugh sarcastically.
"Who's the cake for?"
"For me and my fiance..." I say, gesturing to Thomas.
"We don't serve your kind here..." She scoffs.
"Our kind? What exactly do you mean by that?" I glare slightly.
"Fags," she says simply.
"What the f-" I cut myself off after a quick glance at Emma and try to regain my composure.
"Oh, what, is that word insensitive? Did I offend you?" She rolls her eyes, "Maybe I should put it in other terms. Freaks. Sinners."
"Alex... Let it go..." Tommy whispers softly.
I chew my lip and look up at him.
"Stay alive for us... Let it go... Live to fight another day..."
I look between him and Emma. Emma looks up at me with concerned-looking eyes, reaching up to my face with her tiny baby hands.
"Dada?" She asks softly and I nearly melt.
I regain my composure and turn back to the woman.
"Thanks for your time, we'll be on our way," I whisper, trying to keep the tears bottled up.
Thomas squeezes my hand gently and we walk out silently. I let a small sniffle escape as we start the walk back home and Thomas wraps his arm around my shoulder.
I let a few tears out and he rubs my back softly.
"Shh, shh, don't cry, love," he murmurs, stopping to wipe my tears away gently.
"Nearly everything we do is going to be like this... Not just the wedding but for the rest of our lives. What if Emma gets teased for having two dads? Or if someone wants to hurt our family because we're gay?" I cry softly.
"Lex, look at me. We have each other. We have Emma. Emma has us. And that's all we need. In the end, love wins and that's all that matters."
I sniffle softly and look up at him.
