Isaac's phone dropped to the ground and Ava laughed.
"You're kidding right." She asked through giggles, a hint of urgency in her voice.
"I wish I were, but it seems that Isaac's bones, simply aren't bones. It's actually quite amazing and disconcerting all at the same time. The substance is fire resistant, unbreakable, and grows with Isaac's body. It's virtually indestructible and impossible, yet wonderful all at the same time."
Isaac sat silently. Stunned speechless.
"Pardon my asking but, is Isaac your biological son?"
Ava shook her head slowly. That was no shock to Isaac. He was half-black half-white and both Ava and Edward were alabaster pale. That didn't add up. Ava had told him when he was seven years old.
"Where did you adopt him from?" Dr. Gibson said, cocking an eyebrow.
"Well, it was never really official. We found him, literally, on the side of the road when he was seven. He didn't have any substantial memories. He had no parents on record, he wasn't even in the system. We took him in and got some official papers. There never was an orphanage for him." Ava was avoiding Isaac's eyes on purpose. She had never told him this. He bit his lip but kept quiet. This time Dr. Gibson talked to Isaac directly.
"Do you want to find out what you are and where you came from?"
Isaac's hands started shaking again and his vision was getting blurry. His thoughts were fuzzy and his eyelids began to get heavy. Just before he blacked out he had time to utter the word,
"Yes."
__________
When he awoke, he was in a very different setting. There was a wire and a patch attached to the skin right above his heart. He slowly sat up, slowly turning his head side to side, taking in the strange sight. All around him were monitors and machines. He was completely enclosed in technology. A combination of colorful wires ran from all the machines and screens into one gigantic screen hanging in front of him.
Isaac.
She spoke it into his head. It was as clear as if he himself thought it yet, it wasn't him. her voice was high and clear and pretty. It made him picture flowing white-blond hair and eyes like melted gold. He gasped and looked around.
"Isaac." That was out loud, but it was his mother, not the girl in his head.
He whipped his head around to see his mother sitting on a platform with Doctor Gibson, electrodes attached all around their heads.
"Mom?" He was scared, and he sounded like a child. He cleared his throat and said it again. "Mom." She smiled and there were tears in her eyes, but Doctor Gibson just gave her a stern look.
"I told you he was going to wake up, he wasn't in a coma."
Ava just brushed his words off, keeping eye contact with him.
"Where am I? What's going on?" His voice cracked, showing just how freaked out he truly was. He felt like he was being analyzed. He looked down and saw that he was wearing his blue plaid boxers and a plain white t-shirt. He felt self conscious for some reason.
Isaac.
There she was again. It was as if she was inside his head.
"Who's there?" Said Isaac frantically.
"What do you mean sweetheart." Of course they couldn't hear it, it had been inside his head.
Doctor Gibson spoke again.
