For the past year and a half, I’ve had a man follow me around. I didn’t mind it much because he seemed like a nice person. I confronted him after the third day. He says that his name is Castiel. He scared me at first because I could see his halo, which meant that he was an angel. With what I am, I thought that he was here to kill me.
I’ve always carried around an angel blade given to me by my mother. It stays with me at all times. It was on my way home from school when I stopped and confronted him.
“Who are you and why are you following me?” I asked. He looked at me and smiled kindly.
“My name is Castiel. I am an angel of the Lord,” He introduced. He looked around and sat on a nearby bench. “Would you like to sit?” he asked, motioning to the seat next to him. I hesitantly sat down at the very far edge of the bench.
“Why are you following me? Are you going to kill me?” I asked. He tilted his head to the side, looking confused.
“Why would I do that?” he asked. It was my turn to look confused.
“Because I’m a Nephilim. We’re a disgrace to humankind,” I explained. He smiled kindly.
“Yes, but I am much different from the other angels. I believe that it is not your fault that you are a Nephilim because you chose to be one. They at least need to be given a chance.” I smiled.
“Well, thank you, but why are you following me?”
“Well, I spotted you a few days ago and I saw your wings. I’ve been following you because I wanted to make sure that you are safe from the other angels that want to kill you.” I suddenly realized that he didn’t know my name.
“Oh, well I’m sorry. I thought you were out to kill me. My name’s Y/N,” I introduced, sticking my hand out for him to shake. He shook it.
“Well, I wish you luck. I will not always be around, but I will check in often,” he said while standing. “I must go.” I went to ask him something, to tell him not to go, but he was gone. I sighed and continued my walk home.
It was a Saturday. I was home alone in my room, attempting to do my homework. I was crying because I was so done. I hate school. I had to bring home four textbooks, math, English, biology, and health. I somehow managed to fit them all in my bag but it was so heavy. I had to carry my binder and I had my Chromebook strapped across my chest. By the time I got home my shoulders were very sore. I had dumped all of my stuff on my bed and went to get a snack. I walked back to my room and started on my homework.
And now we’re here. I’m taking all honors classes and health. I don’t understand any of my homework and it’s already late. I don’t have anyone to ask for help and I was so done. I was so busy trying not to break down that I didn’t hear the flutter of wings.
“Y/N? What’s wrong?” someone asked from in front of me. My head shot up and I hastily tried to wipe the tears from my face.
“Cas?” I asked. “What are you doing here?” Castiel moved and sat next to me.
“I came to check on you. What is wrong? Are you hurt?” he asked worriedly. He moved to place his hand on my head but I ducked and laughed lightly.
“No, Cas, I’m just so done with school at the moment,” I explained, moving my biology textbook from my lap and swinging my legs off the side of the bed.
“Why?” asked Cas, tilting his head to the side. I smiled.
“Because I don’t understand anything. I don’t know how to do my algebra homework and my biology work is for a freshman in college. I’m a freshman in high school! It’s just too hard,” I explained. Castiel placed his hand on my back and smiled.
“How about you take a break and we’ll come back to it in a bit and I’ll see if I can help,” he offered. I nodded, standing. We moved and sat in the living room, watching tv before heading back to do my homework.
As time went on, my friendship with Castiel grew. I quickly began to see him as an older brother, sometimes even a father figure. He was always there when I needed him, and even when I didn’t. When I was home alone he would show up and we would hang out together. But there would be times where I wouldn’t see him for maybe a week. I knew he had other things to do, but it would get lonely.
I was so surprised when I saw him at a football game once. I was sitting in the band section of the bleachers before halftime. You see, I’m on the color guard team for my school (if you aren't just going with it. If you don’t know what it is, you can search it on YouTube and watch a video). When my director called us down for warm-ups, I grabbed a flag, swing-flag, and rifle. We did warm-ups and then was called to the field. As I was waiting for our drum major to start us I looked in the crowd and saw Castiel standing with two men. My smile grew when I realized that he was going to watch me perform.
I was laying in bed after the football game and was half asleep when I heard wings and felt the bed dip behind me. I felt a hand brush up against my arm.
“Y/N?” I heard someone whisper.
“Hm?” I rolled over to see Castiel. “Hey Cas,” I said tiredly. He smiled at me.
“Hello Y/N. I loved your show today,” he said. I smiled and sat up, rubbing my eyes.
“Thanks. I saw you. Who were you with?” I asked.
“They were my friends Sam and Dean. Now, get some rest.” I gave Castiel a hug and laid back down. He smiled and as I rolled over to my side, he flew off.
Now we get to the sad part…
Three months after I met Castiel, my mother died. I never knew my father, so my mom was all that I had left. We were driving in the dark, on our way home from a diner in town. We lived in the country, in the back roads, so the closest place to get food was to go into town. We were driving in the back roads when a young man who just recently got his license ran into us. He t-boned the front of the car, sending it up in flames. He just backed up and drove off. As the flames spread, my mother somehow managed to get me out of the window. I watched in total fear and exhaustion as the car was engulfed in flames, along with my mother. I fell to the ground, blacking out.
