She looked at the platinum ring around her left hand's ring finger, adoring how it twinkled against the dim lights of the room while the man she trusts to bring all good things stood in front of her. Soon, they will be announced as husband and wife, witness a few people, his family. She will soon call them as her own. A new family she hopes to be different compared to the family she grew up with.
So far, they have all shown her kindness. But her experience now prevents her to be too trusting. But then, it's all about having faith. You can never be too sure of people. It's always about taking risks even if your heart is afraid. You'll never grow as a person if you never knew failure and commit mistakes and, you'll never know what true happiness is if you're afraid to have faith... At least, it's what the reverend said. A few words that struck deep in her heart while looking up at the man she decided to have faith with.
"Till death shall we part."
They said this words together and as the word escaped her lips, she felt an unusual feeling; a cold sweat run down her spine while the hair at the back of her nape stood on its end. Even her bones felt it. It was a sudden ominous feeling and it made her frightened for a moment. And as they held hands, he noticed that look in her eyes and somehow, he felt the emotion through the grip of her hands on his. It was the same as that night he hurt her.
"Chaeyoung..." He called out softly, studying her sudden emotion clearly showing in her face.
She felt afraid right that moment and she couldn't understand why. It's as if something's coming, something bad is going to happen, making her hands tremble upon his gentle hold.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
It was not him that's making her feel this way. It is that phrase, the vow they uttered. The promise they made as they tied their souls together as one.
That vow felt like it was a threat. That everything shall end. That no matter the happiness you feel, soon it will be taken. That all the good things will vanish like smoke until it never even existed.
That's when it became clear to her.
She was afraid to lose him.
Despite the new worries she had about him especially after learning she had an inheritance that could break her soon to be husband's enemy, the father she knew, her uncle, it made her hard to trust but the decision she made was rash because she had been craving for a family, for love. She decided to set her worries aside so she can be with him and be happy but the vow she had just uttered had given birth to new worries and it's more terrifying than everything else she was afraid of.
She let go of his hands only to reach for his cheeks which were soon cupped by her soft palms, caressing his skin delicately as if she was about to lose him. Tears soon fell from her eyes as she looked straight at his worried ones that are focused on her. She then began to utter in a whisper, her own vow,
"I will follow you even in death."
She promises to herself, deep inside her heart, Death wouldn't be a hindrance, death will not set them apart.
Chanyeol felt everything with just the look in her eyes; her fear and worries. And somehow he felt the same... that everything else will fall apart if she leaves him, that she's the only thing in this world that will hold his sanity. He wouldn't have asked her to marry him, to be tied to him if she would not leave the day after. He was also afraid that he might not see her again if she leaves.
Holding her hands that's upon his cheeks, he replied with all sincerity, "So will I."
It may be mere words of to those who have heard it, words that expressed the undying fidelity. But between the two of them, it's literal meaning is their truth. It's not just their fidelity... death wouldn't even be something that would keep them apart.
