Ben collapsed to his knees in the darkness of the night, he was breathless and panting so fast that he thought his heart was going to burst from the very core of his chest.  He felt the power of yet another blast and rose like a panther, sprinting away from the terrifying noise as fast as his feet would take him.  The noise, the bright lights and the overpowering fear that he felt was beyond words.

This cannot be real, this cannot be happening! The normality of the day disappeared as fast as lightning strikes the ground.  His head ached so much, his chest hammered and the fear that he felt for his life was overwhelming.

There was another loud blast and a light so terrifyingly bright that he was momentarily blinded. A light that was different to the others he had witnessed this spine chilling day. Then, all at once the chaos stopped as abruptly as it had begun. The silence was almost deafening as Ben struggled to concentrate. He strained his ears trying to listen for any signs of life, any signs of danger! As he crouched behind what was left of a tower block; smouldering with ash and smoke, he tried to focus. There was no sign of life anywhere that he could see. He crouched as still as possible, squinting to try and observe any movement at all……nothing!

The silence and tranquillity that now filled the air was eerie. The deathly screams and explosions had all gone. All that would be left in the light of day would be devastation.  What had happened this fateful day? Why had the world been turned into this war zone of absolute terror and the biggest question that tormented him was, who?

Ben tried to remember if he had seen any signs that this was about to begin. But no, there was nothing.  As he struggled to come to terms with what the world had encountered today, he became increasingly weary. This horror had been going on non-stop for almost 15 hours now. Had anyone else survived this consternation? Was he the sole survivor?

‘What was that’….. Ben must have fallen asleep, which was something he desperately tried not to do. Wanting to stay awake, stay alert! ‘There it is again’ there was a creak in amongst the debris; someone or SOMETHING is there. Trying to focus in the darkness, not wanting to be seen.... not yet anyway. Ben tried to take in his surroundings to understand where he was and what was around him. Then there was another noise behind him. Startled, Ben grabbed a long solid piece of the debris and swung round ready to hit out at anything that could harm him. He gave out a loud angry cry; somehow he thought this would help scare off any unwanted visitors.  But as he swung round he lost his footing and fell to the ground, his back hitting hard against the rubble as he done so.  Ben froze, looking and listening for anything at all. When there were no signs of any movement he staggered up to his knees, scanning the area as much as he could.  Again, all was still and quiet. ‘I definitely heard movement’ Ben told himself. But where and what was it?

Ben cowered there amongst the debris for hours. This was the most terrifying time of his life. The silence continued to grow into a deafening noise that he had never before experienced. How can a silent world sound so thunderous?

As the light of day slowly began to paint a picture of the world that was left. Ben looked in absolute horror at the scene.  Everything was desecrate, cold, bleak and deathly.  He stood up slowly walking towards what would have been the city. But now, all that stood was himself; a drained, distressed and lonely man. The world that was full of life and beauty had turned overnight into a godforsaken, abandoned planet.

Ben fell to the ground; his body curled up like a foetus and he sobbed as he had never sobbed before. A chilling noise alerted him, and as he looked up he saw a figure. It was dark and unnerving, at least 7ft tall, walking towards Ben, it had eyes like orange burning embers, elongated and slanted. The figure lifted one of its arms, the three long spiny fingers pointed at him, as it done so a fluorescent light encapsulated Ben. The pain was torturous, then….. death!

The figure turned and walked slowly but purposefully towards a gathering of beings. They were all the same. Giant in size, long arms with three long spiny fingers on each hand and elongated eyes that were a hateful orange.  This is their world now!
