She looks fine for the first few minutes. Then the water sprays off of the side of the rock, splashing her. She screams as her grip loosens and she slips. I see her friends tense up, frowning, ready to rush forward at any second. I clench my fists, frustrated with my inability to stop this madness. I wish I could push Eric right off that cliff. "One minute left!" Tris yells, her voice shaking in what I'd assume is panic. The water hits her again, with more force this time. Her knuckles are white. I won't let her fall. I won't let another one die on my watch. "Time's up!" Tris yells frantically, and they rush forward, grabbing her wrists and hands, hauling her up over the side. Eric tilts his head, pulling his mouth to one side. I think he expected her to fall, or give up. I'm glad she didn't.
The fights are finished by the mid-afternoon. I hang out with Shauna after she gets out of work. "You're coming to capture the flag tonight, right?" I ask. She grins "Of course! I'm an instructor too you know." I smirk "Yeah, yeah I know. That's why I asked. Speaking off, how's Kate treating you?" She sighs "Not as well as Four treats you. She's not even close to as hot either." I laugh. "At least you don't have Eric breathing down your neck." She groans "We do have Max, though! You're lucky. The old wheezer is crazy!" I raise an eyebrow. "Really? Because Eric made an initiate hang off the Pit railing today because she conceded a fight. Tell me again how crazy Max is." Her eyes widen. "Ok, never mind." I nod, scoffing quietly. "We keep trying to stop him, but there's nothing we can do. I think Four's going to snap one of these days." She sighs. "What about your initiates then?" I shrug "Most of them are pretty hopeless, and the ones that aren't are just cruel, so, I guess we're banking on 2nd stage to get us out of the hole." Shauna smirks. "And the Stiff?" I tilt my head. "She's got some spunk, I guess. Too small to do a lot of good though." Shauna goes quiet for a moment "Alex was small too." It hits me in the face like a well-placed slap. My eyes sting suddenly. I swallow hard, the memories flooding my head so fast I can barely breathe. I'd forgotten about that. I can see her body lying broken in the Chasm again. I can see her red hair and the bruises on her arms. And I can see Tyson. I shiver. I come back to reality, and find Shauna staring at me, concerned. "I'm sorry Cal, I didn't mean to..." I shake my head. "No. No it's fine, really. I can't forget about her." She purses her lips. "I think the Stiff will make it." She says softly. I sigh "I hope so."
I put on my best running shoes that night. We are meeting at the train in 5, so I have to hurry. Four rounded up the initiates a few minutes ago. I put my hair into a ponytail and stare at my face for a brief second. I'm pretty, I guess. But it doesn't really matter in Dauntless.
I jog past Zeke's apartment, knocking on the door. No answer. I frown. Where is he? I knock on the door again. Still no response. I look around, but I can't see any sign of him. I guess he isn't coming.
