The night passes in a blur. Four tells me the story on the way home. How Tris climbed the Ferris wheel. "Genius." I whisper, the victory still sweet in my chest. Shauna pouts in a corner of the train car. Needless to say, she was on the losing team.
I check Zeke's apartment again when we get back. I'm actually worried for once. He always checks in, or comes over. Always something. I grab the spare key from on top of the door frame. It isn't stalking if your boyfriend is missing, right? I click open the door, pushing it slowly. No noise, no nothing. I step in, looking around a bit. The breeze from the window flutter through my hair. Nothing seems out of place.
I frown. This is strange. Something just feels wrong. I have to find Shauna. Maybe he mentions something to her, or Four.
I drop by his office on the top floor. The intern with purple hair watches me as I check his office. Empty. I walk back to her desk, leaning on the glass "Have you seen Zeke at all?" She shrugs. "He left a couple hours ago, like usual." I clench my jaw. "Ok thanks." I say tensely, starting to feel panicked.
Shauna is hanging out with Chase and some other girl at the bar. I walk to her quickly, my ponytail coming loose. I pull her to the side. "Have you heard anything from Zeke?" I say, hushed. She shakes her head, and my heart sinks. "No, why?" I sigh anxiously. "I can't find him anywhere. He left work hours ago, and no one has seen him since." She frowns. "Weird. He would have told you if he was going somewhere, right?" I nod. She crosses her arms. "Do you think he's ok?" I shrug "I don't know. I'm worried, Shauna." She shifts her weight. "I'm sure he's fine, but check with Four, just in case." I nod. "Ok. I'll keep you updated."
I'm fairly certain of where Four is at this time of night. Not in bed, definitely not. I head straight for the simulation room. I know he likes to practice, constantly.
When I reach him, he's already under. The machine shows his simulation, and I have nothing to do but watch. I sigh, feeling slightly guilty. But, he's seen mine, so, what's the harm?
He's in a room, and his father stands in front of him. I could have guessed this one. I shiver, because Marcus looks just like my mother does in my simulation. "This is for your own good." His voice echoes, and he brings the belt down. I flinch. Four is my friend, of course it's hard to watch. And the look in his eyes. He's Dauntless, really brave. Not cruel, like Eric, but brave. Truly Dauntless.
The simulation ends. It still shocks me, only four fears. I stand, stepping into the room. He stares at the wall, and I touch his arm. "Hey." He turns, flushed red. "Oh. Hi Cal." I blink. "I saw it." I say softly. He shakes his head. "There's the look." I raise an eyebrow. "What?" He sighs "The pity." I smirk "No, that was a look of awe, Four. I admire your fears. And I know how it feels." He frowns. "No, you don't. Yours was different. Bad, but different." I sigh, dropping it. "Anyway, have you seen Zeke?" I say, my mind snapping back to that worry that consumes me again. He looks up. "No. Is he gone?" I step back slightly. "How'd you know that?" He sighs. "I was afraid this would happen." I scrunch my eyebrows "What's happened?" He doesn't answer. "What's happened, Four!?" He frowns. "They're sick of waiting, I guess. They want you to come to them." My breath catches in my chest. "They took him." He nods. "Follow me."
