A Thousand Years- Christina Perri
I lay engulfed in the warm sheets, my back presssed against the thin mattress. My unruly hair messy and knotted. I shut my eyes for a while breathing the faint smell of roses as I lay in the sheer state of uninterupted bliss.
My mind races with a train of thoughts, contemplating about tommorrow. My birthday. It is often seen as a special occassion. The day you were gifted the cherished gift of life and came out of the secure confines of your mother's womb to face the foreign world is something deemed celebration worthy.
Most teenagers would be excited for their birthday, a day filled with fun, laughs and incedents to be stored away as a beautiful memory.
Of course as always happiness is clouded with the dark, dreary thoughts of the ruthless monsters governing the world.
Tomorrow I will turn twenty where finally I will start a new chapter of my life. Co-incedentially Michelle, Eve, Violet and Rose also will do the same.
Instead of a extravagant party though, we will be taken away to an examination to be determined if we are worthy vampires and workers for our kingdom.
My mind swirls and churns with anxiousness and angst. I can't imagine becoming one of them. A cruel and merciless monster who feeds on blood, human blood. I mentally gag at the thought. Sure we may suffer as humans, but I would much rather be a miserable mortal than a cold, merciless monster.
If I am changed tomorrow, I will immediately be put on the roster for unemployed vampires and will most likely obtain a job within a few days. Woman are probably the most inferior, disrespected people with the common jobs being prostitution and slavery. I shudder at the disgusting thought. Since being a small child I had always dreamt of probably being a successful doctor one day, curing maladies, assisting people, bringing a smile to their faces and bringing a change to the world. However this dream was shattered when they emerged and changed everything.
"Stop, you need to stop thinking about this. It's all too much. You're only making it worse." A nagging voice says in the back of my head.
My eyes snap open, ceasing all my thoughts of tomorrow.
I slowly sit up and prop myself up on my elbows. I observe the old, chipped, pale pink paint that occupies my walls. Cracked and worn from all the years of being applied. I've never taken it down though because I remember my mom and I painted it together. I remember the innumerable breaks we took due to my little body getting tired and the mess we made all over the room.Slowly, gradually, all my furniture and bedroom items disappear until it's completely bare.
Suddenly two figures appear, standing side by side. The tall one, a woman with long, sleek brown hair that flows down her back and bright blue eyes full of warmth and comfort, has a large paintbrush grasped in her right hand while the other holds a paint can.
The smaller figure, a girl who appears to be not a day over six, stands next to her holding a petite brush and a white soiled towel. They both have numerous amounts of paint splotches covering their hair and clothes. Despite their messy state, they both have wide grins plastered on their faces. Joy and happiness is evident as they giggle and laugh while swiping their brushes up and down, the paint devouring and overlapping the ugly, bland, brown walls.Suddenly the beautiful scene vanishes, all of the furniture back in it's place. The two figures gone.
I do not know what I did then. I may have cried, wet tears trailing down my pale cheeks as I stared blankly in front of me, desperately trying to bring back the memory of me and my mum. There is not a single day I do not miss her, not a single thing which does not remind me of her.
Frustrated, I give up and pad over to my bathroom. Turning on the faucet I splash cold water on my face earning a short gasp at the icy sensation. Following that, I run a brush through my light brown hair before stumbling outside. It's about time I pay my mother a visit.
