"Just to see you smile"
***************
Epilogue
It was warm and bright outside, a perfect day for a picnic in the meadow under the sun. Harry had packed a basket and the kids and loaded the car up. He then helped his very beautiful and very pregnant wife into the front seat of his car, concern for her well-being his prime emotion.
But she was fine, of course. Lexi was always fine, even when she wasn’t. Her sense of perseverance and lack of self-pity was something that he’d always admired about her, and one of the many things he loved about her.
Harry drove away from the gated mansion and into town, past the center and towards their favorite secluded spot, just at the top of a hill, surrounded by trees and tall grass. It was the perfect oasis. A place for the kids to run and play and for Harry and Lexi to disappear from the real world and just be them for a moment.
Once Harry parked the car, the children wasted no time in climbing from the vehicle.
“Oliver! Luke! Anastasia! Be careful,” Lexi yelled anxiously. Harry placed a soothing hand on her growing baby bump, attempting to calm her. But now that Lexi was pregnant with her third and fourth child she’d long since developed and honed her maternal side. Once a mother, always a mother, and she couldn’t ever quite quell the nervous panic she got when her children went out of her sight and reach.
Harry took her hand and together they walked to a soft patch in the tall grass. He laid the blanket and helped her lower herself onto the ground. She was six months pregnant now, with twins, and getting around was not easy at all. Harry laid out the spread of food: sandwiches, pasta salad, lemonade, cookies, and fruit salad. Despite her worry, her stomach rumbled appreciatively at the delicious food in front of her. Harry chuckled.
“Where are the kids?” she questioned anxiously, trying to see above the grass. This was a bad idea, she thought to herself. I can’t see them anywhere. At least at home, they’re contained. Harry sighed heavily, taking her hand once more.
“They’re fine, baby,” he assured her. “They’re just playing, as usual. The more important matter at hand is, how are you?”
Lexi smiled and slid closer to him. His arms went around her, and one of his hands gently massaged her baby bump. She threw her head back and moaned. That felt absolutely glorious.
“I’m much better now that you’ve started doing that,” she muttered contentedly. “That feels amazing.”
“I’m glad,” he mumbled, concern etched on his face. Lexi hadn’t been sleeping very well lately, and he hated not being able to take that pain from her. Lexi and his children were his life, one hundred percent.
They sat there like that a moment longer, and then Lexi’s common sense returned to her. She frowned and pushed his hands off of her, sitting up onto her knees as best she could to try and see her babies. Though they weren’t babies so much anymore. Oliver was almost four, Luke was three, and Anastasia was eighteen months old. With her two baby girls inside of her right now, she was set on children. But Harry was determined for ‘just one more.’ And as much as Lexi worried that six kids would be just too much, she knew she’d eventually cave. As Avery always said now, the more the merrier.
“What’s wrong?” Harry questioned softly. She shook her head.
“I’m just worried,” she mumbled apologetically. Harry heaved a playful sigh.
“I’m sure they’re just fine,” he reassured her. She bit her lip. “But, I will go check. Just to make sure.”
Lexi grinned that heart stopping smile of hers, and Harry leaned forward for a kiss. She complied, and, energized by her affection, he jumped to his feet and walked leisurely away from her.
As Harry walked away, Lexi was struck once more just how lucky she was. She had three children, whom she loved more than she’d ever loved anything, and a husband who couldn’t be better. Her life, truthfully, was perfect. She felt apologetic as he disappeared from her view for making him go. After all, he was probably right. The kids were probably just fine.
Just as she thought this, a small kick on the left side of her abdomen popped up unexpectedly, as if agreeing with her. It was like one of her baby girls already had attitude. Mom, she seemed to say. You really shouldn’t worry so much. Lexi smiled at the thought.
As Harry returned, their three children in tow, she grinned. They all settled around her and gazed up in adoration, and her eyes welled with tears. Harry dished up food and passed it around to the kids, and Lexi attempted to get them all situated. Finally, when everyone was eating in content silence, she felt at peace once more.
Her children were around her, her husband was by her side, and it wouldn’t be long before two more bundles of joy joined the young Styles family. Her life was perfect, her husband was handsome, and her kids made her happier more and more each day. She realized belatedly that all her worries about having enough money to support five kids were stupid and not very well thought out. They were just as dumb as her concerns of not being able to discipline and handle her children, especially with two new babies in the house. But the peaceful feeling edged into her subconscious once more, slowing her erratic heart rate and soothing her frazzled nerves. Not for the first time, nor for the last, she thought those same signature words. The ones that always eased her mind and put it all into perspective.
Everything’s going to be great.
