Dance class was almost over. Ms. Grey was instructing us as usual. "One two three four! One two three! Switch!" She called out to everyone. I was smoothly following the dance moves as the song played and so did everyone else. "Fantastic job, everyone! Keep this up!" Ms. Grey said. Just when class was ending up, Ms. Grey asked if anyone was performing in the talent show. Some students raised their hands. "I'll be acting out a skit from William Shakespeare. " said Percy. "I'll be doing some comedy with a ventriloquist dummy." said Davis. "I'll be doing magic tricks." said Gabrielle. "I'll be doing a little contortionism." said Harvey. I raised my hand. "I'll be performing in the Talent Show with Andrea and Frida." I said. "We're gonna perform a Dance Choreography of our own!" Frida exclaimed. Ms. Grey's face lights up. "You are?! That's wonderful! I wish you all the best of luck. I believe in you." Suddenly the intercom came on. "Attention, students! I have come to inform you all that Mrs. Bruins has collapsed on the floor during this period due to some respiratory cause. Right now, an Ambulance has arrived to transport her to the hospital for recovery. Therefore, all students are dismissed early today. May we wish the best for Ms. Bruins and her family."
"WHAT?!" I exclaimed. My classmates and I rushed to the window and looked outside to to see an ambulance in the parking lot. One kid burst in the room out of breath. "I think... I know what... happened to Mrs. Bruins!" He said between breaths. Ms. Grey, concerned walked over to him. "What happened to her, Shawn?" She asked. Shawn took a minute to catch his breath. He finally replied. "She was just doing her job and she was coughing almost every time she spoke. In fact her coughing was getting worse and worse and out of nowhere, she collapsed." The whole class started murmuring. "I acted quickly in giving her CPR while Keith ran to get the nurse. Rose called 911 and told the operator that she collapsed and she also ran and told the principal what happened. Thankfully, it didn't take long for an ambulance to arrive, since the nearest Hospital was only six miles away." Ms. Grey felt a little relieved. "That was brave of you, Keith. You're a good person." I couldn't believe my favorite teacher collapsed and is being sent to the hospital. This would not be worth an early dismissal... At this. Everyone walked to their lockers to grab their things. Except this time, it was quieter. Much quieter. I grabbed my jacket out of my locker and put it on and I walked towards the exit to wait for my friends to meet me there. And finally, we were walking home. "I'm worried about Mrs. Bruins." said Frida. "My grandma went through a similar situation when I was 9. And Grandma almost died. I don't want Mrs. Bruins to die..." Andrea tried to reassure her that she'll pull through. "She's gonna get better, Frida. I know that." She said. "Maybe we'll visit her this weekend." I said. "Just to check up on her and bring her flowers and a get well card." That made Frida feel a little better. Shortly we walked to the Bus stop just in time before bus leaves. I do not want to wait 20 minutes in this cold air. I looked out the window to see the school getting farther and farther and the bus stopped briefly when the ambulance zoomed past us. I sighed. Shortly before the bus reached our stop, my phone buzzed. I got an email from the school saying that while Mrs. Bruins is getting treated, a substitute teacher will take her place until she returns fully recovered. Finally, the bus reached our stop and we stepped off. "I'll see you later, guys. We can meet up at Frida's house, get flowers and a get well card, visit Mrs. Bruins at the hospital and maybe we'll discuss about our choreography." I said to them. "Right. See you tomorrow?" Asked Frida. "Yep. Tomorrow afternoon." I replied. "Bye, guys." We say goodbye, turned and left. I walked through the shortcut until I reached my house in order to avoid walking ten blocks in this confounded cold weather. I took out my house key, turned the lock and opened the door. There was Dad was in the living room. "You're home early." He greeted. I hung up my jacket. "There was an energency at school. My math teacher collapsed from a respiratory related cause and she's been taken to the hospital." I replied. "Until she recovers, a substitute teacher will take her place." "Your mother will be home by three-thirty. She took Nicky to the doctor's office for his appointment." Dad said. "Okay, Dad. I'll be upstairs." I say before walking up the stairs to my room. There, I sat by my desk and do some homework. I look at my phone to check the time. 1:46. Normally school ends at 2:45. I sighed and got busy with my worksheet.
