A City Lost to Progress

Deep inside
   this world of ours,
there lies another,
   deep and dark
For in the depths
   of the darkest seas
where no human
   or creature may be,
There is a pass
   into this world
lives on the other
   side of Earth.

Deep inside
   their kingdoms lay
where we thought
   molten rocks stay,
The nations warm
   from Earth's core;
men of darkness
   find their worth.
A city lost
   to all eternity,
Atlantis rose
   from the dark sea.

It was the first
   they had seen
come down from
   the world above,
Dropping from
   the watery sky
sent from heaven,
   a paradise,
And the people
   yearned to know
of the strange
   world above.

Messages they sent
   while trying to reach
a place where they
   could not see,
But humans never
   looked for them,
for in the deep,
   a human is scared.

The deep, we know,
    is dangerous;
the deep, we know,
    has monsters;
The deep could kill
    us in an instant
if our machines
    cannot resist it.
And yet we reach
    beyond our planet
to find a friend
    or something like it.

We ignore the ones
    we've always lived with
and try to find
    some other existence.
And by the time
    that they reach us,
we'll be gone
    into the abyss
That we still call
    "Progress."
