Tomorrow was Venus's birthday but Luna didn't know what to do. She thought, "Venus hates making a big deal out of it but she does so much for me that I want to do something special for her.". Luna was chilling with David at his house and decided to ask him what to do. He responded, "Throw her a surprise party, she thinks that she hates parties but it's probably because she hasn't been to a good one.". Rachel, David's mom, had been secretly eavesdropping on the couple the whole time and the second she heard the word "party" she came running into the room. Rachel exclaimed, "I'll help you plan it! Please let me! I love party planning and I haven't had an excuse to do it in years!". David chimed in, "You should take her up on that. My bar mitzvah was hailed as Sweetnum Valley's biggest and best event thanks to my mom!". Luna laughed and said, "Well, I trust your judgment! Okay, Rachel, what do you say we get this show on the road?". David followed his mom and girlfriend into the kitchen where the ladies began to get organized.
Venus had been so busy with teaching Victoria about telekinesis and her own studies that she had not realized her birthday was a day away. She was checking the mailbox when she saw an envelope from Nova. She thought as she ripped it open: "A birthday card for me? It's not my birthday until the 15th and today is the ...oh...wait... tomorrow is my birthday!". She let out an annoyed sigh. Venus felt her phone vibrate and saw that Luna had texted her to say she was going to be at David's house for the night. Venus said sarcastically to Morticia, "What a surprise? Luna is hanging out with David.". She ate KFC leftovers and worked on some school work, there was a part of her that saw the lameness of her night but she tried not to think about it.
Luna and Rachel had work efficiently because they only had a day to plan everything. Rachel put her phone down and informed, "Okay, so I ordered the cake and I'll call the catering company I had in mind now, how many people are coming?". Luna's face reddened with embarrassment, she admitted: "I haven't actually um..invited...anyone yet.". Rachel yelled, "Oh my god, Luna! You need to give people at least a day's warning! And we need to have a rough number of guests so we can plan it out!". David interrupted, "Hey! Lay off her for a second!". Luna explained, "It's just I don't really know who Venus's friends are. She doesn't talk about anyone apart from Asali.". Rachel suggested, "Well, you guys are witches so maybe you can just invite a bunch of random fellow witches and people from her classes.". They went through the WSA's (Witch's Society of America) directory then Venus's class ones and invited enough people from each one until it was a good party number.
The day had arrived and Venus felt no different than she had yesterday. Venus thought, "Oh, I pray to god Luna doesn't do anything special for me! My ideal birthday would be me, a book and a bubble bath.". Luna exclaimed as her older sister walked into the kitchen, "Happy birthday! I made you breakfast!". Venus had always loved chocolate chip pancakes so Luna had braved the task of making something somewhat complicated and made her some. Venus looked at the burnt, unappetizing pancakes but knew that Luna had tried really hard. She took a bite of them and bluffed, "Oh, these taste delicious! Thank you!". Luna replied, "Okay, I gotta go. I told David I'd meet him at 10. Oh, and David wanted to talk to you so you'll have to swing by the Schwartz's house at 7.". Venus thought, "Usually I get annoyed by how much time she spends with her boyfriend but I'd rather she be with him than doing some extravagant thing with me.". But little did Venus know that the very thing Luna was going out to do was to plan an extravagant party!
When David opened the door for Luna so did a wave of delicious smells. Luna exclaimed to Rachel, "You didn't have to make all these latkes and knishes! We got all that stuff coming from the catering company.". Joshua, David's dad, explained, "Once you give Rachel the chance to host something there's no stopping her from going all out!". Luna blew up the balloons while David hung the streamers around the house. They had gotten a large slab cake with blue flowers and the catering company had what David says "has the best Chinese food in Sweetnum Valley.". By around 6 pm they were completely ready and the guests started arriving.
Asali was the first one to arrive, she cried, "Oh, this is so exciting! I've never been to a surprise party!". Luna offered Asali some food and she became addicted to the latkes. The witches from the WSA all came together, Luna didn't really know them apart from a few brief encounters. One of them decided to break the ice and said to Luna, "Hi, I'm Mauve. You must be Luna, Venus's older sister. Thanks for inviting us!". The last person to arrive was Liam, Luna had no clue that Venus hated him and was just happy that everyone had arrived.
Rachel had thrown a few surprise parties and suggested that Luna opened the door for Venus then have everyone else come out from the living room and yell surprise. Luna waited anxiously near the door, she thought: "Oh, did I make the right decision? What if she really hates this party?". Venus rang the doorbell and Luna's hands were shaking as she opened the door. The guests all popped up and yelled, "Surprise!". Venus faked a smile but thought, "Oh no! Why? Why? Damn. Okay, it's time to pretend like I'm happy so I don't seem rude.". She grew even angrier when she saw that Liam was there. He saw her look at him and came towards her so Venus started talking to Poppy, one of the witches who had come from WSA. Liam noticed Venus's coldness towards him and said to Luna, "Why exactly did you invite me? Venus still seems to feel awkward around me.". Luna replied, "I didn't know you guys disliked each other. I just chose you randomly from her class list.". Venus managed to find Asali in the crowd of people she didn't know and talked to her for the rest of the night.
Luna brought forward the birthday cake she had gotten for her sister. Rachel put as many candles as she could find so Luna was extra careful in carrying it. David suggested, "Let's all gather in a circle around Venus and start singing.". Venus felt quite uncomfortable having everyone's eyes on her, she thought: "Oh, what I would do to be at home, reading a book.". As she blew out the candles one of her classmates who had been standing across from her fell to the ground. Venus exclaimed, "What happened to him?". Luna rushed towards the guy and saw that he had gunshot wounds, she said: "He's been shot!".
