It was late when we got back, so after returning Janner's body to its original pace on the bier in the courtyard, we all went right to bed.
I lay awake long after everyone else had fallen into dreamless slumber. I was too worked up to even think about sleep, so I lay in the dark and remembered. I thought back to the Dragon Day festival in Glipwood. That was the first time I had met Janner. We had had so much fun together, playing games, teasing Kalmar, watching the dragons.
I then thought of the factory, and how that boy had been like a beacon in the dark night, inspiring me to start the revolution. I remembered him begging me to come with him, to escape with him and be free. Why hadn't I gone with him?
I don't know.
I stayed still, thinking like that for hours. Finally I sat up. By the bit of light coming in through the cracks around the door, I could tell it was dawn. Creeping through the maze of people, I slipped out the door.
The sky was heavenly this morning. A perfect canvas put there by the Maker to remind us of all that was still beautiful in the world.
Taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air, I turned to the bier where Janner's body lay.It was gone.
