This is just Part I
Olivia's POV
The classic modern sleekness of the venue seem to become more and more of a picture or a painting unfolding around me. Minutes felt like hours and hours took their sweet time passing, exhausting every ounce of boredom out of my being. The ballroom was filled to the brim with wealthy men and women dragging their plus ones, guzzling champagne and expensive dinners like there was no tomorrow. They made it hard to even fake smile as I listened to their dull conversations about their financial strides.
Ever so often my eyes would drift over to the crowd of men in black suits, searching for his brown hair. He sat with them in a suit identical to everyone else's, but you could tell by the way the rest hung onto to every word he was saying that he was in charge.
It was odd to see him address a crowd like that. With authority and confidence. I was probably the only person to really see the underlying tension in his frame. The truth was that it took a lot out of him to do these events, but he had to in order to "please the investors."
"Ms. Lawrence," my eyes snapped back to the expecting looks on the elderly couples faces. "Sorry. It's been a long night... what we're you saying," I plastered a forced smile trying my hardest to not drift out of reality once more.
"A little birdie told me that you and your husband are planning to expand Ink studios to the UK." I couldn't help the pride that erupted in my chest. The small business Adam and I had started as a shot in the dark years ago was now the largest book publishing firms in the North. Over 1,000 books edited, printed, published and sold including Adam's in four years.
I would think about that every time we ate microwaveable noodles in our vacation home in Greece or France or Italy. It humbled me to remember the red ink on our bills and nights of cereal dinners. "It's a working progress. We are trying to out source some indie writers in other areas. The plan is to go global... one day."
Baby steps. I had to remind myself. At the end of a long day trying to expand an empire, I also had to attend to appointments with my kids. Not my own... well not in the literal sense, but the kids that would sit down for hours telling me about their struggles every week. It was the most satisfying job I could ever ask for. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Before I could go into any further plans, I felt an arm snake across my waist. "Mr. Lawrence," The old woman tried to smile through all the Botox in her. "Mr. and Ms. Faye it was good seeing you. Next month same time?" Before they could reply I was whisked award from the table.
"Please tell me its time to go." My eyes scanned his tired ones perched on top of bags. He hadn't slept much these past days, drawing up plans to present to the investors today. A hint of smirk was crept across his face, making him look ten times younger. "Yes. It only took till fucking 12:39 to get Bennett to stop kissing my ass and asking questions."
His arm cascaded over my shoulders making us in that moment, teens again and not 26 year olds with responsibilities.
"I'll bring the car around."
This is just part one.
