Every five years a part of history is revived, the universe's reaction to earth surviving. It shouldn't have, had everything gone to plan, one side of the earth would have been engulfed by unrelenting waves of heat, the arctic melting, pollution turning into a molten toxic sludge, and oceans boiling turning the air into unbreathable fog. The other side turning into a frozen wasteland devoid of all life as a result of the sun god being worn out.
