The Shooter

In the time before the shooting, I was Carson Williams. I was fourteen years old.I had a thirteen year old brother called Case. My mum is always working, so Case and I basically look after ourselves and each other. We always finished our school work on time. Our dad died a few years ago from a heart attack. We're used to the way things work now.

July 19, 2009.

The windows were shaking. They're small, thick and made of plastic, which is blast proof. Quite suitable for our school. The window keeps making a strange noise, which sounds a bit like popcorn popping. That's when I remember the younger kids are having an assembly in the gym. Something like a cheer is heard from the gym, people start screaming with the noise of fireworks exploding in the background. Well, that's what I thought it was until the school got put into lock-down. Our teacher, Mrs. Eastman tells the whole class to hide under our desks.

The classroom door swings open. A kid who looks around the age of sixteen enters our classroom. I don't know if he's from this school because he isn't wearing any school uniform. He stands at the front of the whole class and pulls out a gun. He aims it directly at Mrs. Eastman and shoots her in the forehead. The whole class is screaming, except for me. 'Everyone, get up" he hisses. Everyone gets up and doesn't move a muscle. The shooter paces around the classroom. A kid named Ruby notices the shooters name on the gun. "Excuse me, are you Brendan Murray?" asks Ruby politely. The shooter, who probably is Brendan Murray, walks over to Ruby and shoots her in the stomach.

From the corner of my eye, I notice a boy called Ashton Jacobs crawling towards the door. Brendan realizes what I'm staring at. "Where do you think you're going?" yells Brendan. Brendan shoots Ashton in the back of the head. Some girls in the back row scream, so Brendan shoots them too. Soon enough, most of the class has been shot and are fighting to stay alive.

I hear a gunshot coming from the school corridor with a scream followed behind it. My eyes widen when I see my brother Case lying on the ground with blood pouring from his arm. I try not to panic, but he's screaming. I throw my drink bottle at Brendan's gun, which falls onto the floor.

I bolt out of the classroom and drag Case into a vacant room. I lock the door so no one can get in. "Case, where's your phone?" I whisper. Case points to his jacket pocket. I go through his pocket and take out his phone. I dial 000 and ask the person on the other end of the phone for the police and paramedics. I tell her everything.

As I'm about to hang up, the classroom doorknob starts rattling. I see Brendan in the corridor walking around. I manage to quietly open the classroom window. I pick Case up and gently carry him out the window. As soon as Case and I are outside, I take my jacket off and wrap it around Case's wounded arm.

The police arrive and take Case over to the ambulance. I go to the school entrance. "You can't go in there. It's not safe" exclaims one of the police officers. I stare at the officer as I walk up the school steps. "They can't just shoot my brother and get away with it" I tremble. The officer looks at Case, who is crying. "They won't get away with it" promises the officer as he places his hand on my shoulder. I look at Case. "You stay here" I beg the officer. I run into the school. I can hear people yelling at me but I don't care.

I run into the classroom. I can hear more gunshots. Brendan enters the same room that I'm in, but this time he brought his friend, Archie Griffiths. They head towards me. I am trapped and there is no way I can escape.

I go to grab their guns but they both shoot me in the stomach. I immediately fall to the ground screaming in pain. The police rush into the room and Brendan and Archie are aiming their guns at the police. Then it suddenly turns into a shooting spree. One police officer dodges the bullet, which lands right into my other wound. The police shoot Brendan and Archie in the head so they have no hope of living.

The ambulance arrives and takes me to hospital. My life is on the edge and no one knows if I will survive. I look to my left and I see Case walk through. He sits on my hospital bed. "Are you going to live?" cries Case. I shrug. At this point, I have no idea for what's going to happen in my future. My eyes start to close slowly and Case prays to God that I will survive. I fight and I fight to live. It works... eventually.

This is a day that I'll never forget. Although, some days I wish that I'd forget it but I guess it will come in handy someday.

It's been ten years since that happened. I'mproud to say that I'm still alive and nothing like that has happened since. Mymum earned enough money to get a new house and new school. Our life is back ontrack.
