"Kayla do you think you could have these papers retyped with the edits and ready for the trial tomorrow? We need to have this man in custody asap. Thank you." I stated rather than asked to my new assistant while looking at my computer.

"Yes ma'am." She said.

"And please make sure you are on time. I am a busy person and if you can't keep up, then you are going to have and find yourself a new job."

"Yes ma-"

"-and can you call Mr. Peterson's office and inform him that I need to see him in my office pertaining to the Demarkez case in fifteen." I said.

She wrote everything down in a hurry. I was sitting at my desk looking over the files but she was still standing there.

"Today please! Thank you." I said shooing her out.

She nodded and left. I heard her grunt, but she has been here for three days now. I don't feel any remorse for her because there are a lot of people out here who would much rather have some type of job than none.

Looking back at the files I sighed. This is a big case for me and I just can't get enough evidence to prove that he is guilty. No one will testify against him, all the evidence has came up missing and his lawyer is also one of the best in the state of Missouri.

My firm is pretty good overall though, I am lucky enough to be the third partner here. And female at that.

Ten minutes later my office phone started ringing. I answered.

"Hello"

"Lauren, Kayla said you needed to see me." He said.

"Yes, WE do have a case together and I would appreciate it if you put in your two cents every once in a while." I said irritated.

"And you can't just talk about it over the phone?" He asked.

"Whatever Samuel. I'm dropping you from the case. You obviously don't care or have time and you are not about to get credit for this when you aren't doing anything." I said.

"But-" With that I hung up.

Kayla walked in again holding the folders I assigned her for tomorrow.

"Um, Ms. Fields....it's six-thirty, and...."

"Yes Kayla, I am well aware of the time. What do you need?" I said.

"Yeah, but my kids are still at daycare and if I don't get them by seven I'm going to have to pay sixty dollars up front for being late."

"Then go." I said.

"Really?" She asked in a surprised tone.

"Yes, just make sure those files are ready, please and thank you."

"Yes ma'am, goodnight."

"Goodnight Kayla."

Then she left.

Kayla wasn't all that bad. She wasn't the worst assistant, but she wasn't the best either. I understand that she is a young single mother and has other things to do, so i'm not going to keep her here past her hours for no reason.

Me being twenty-eight and having this position is kind of stressful. It's just work, work and more work. Some people would say that I am a workaholic, but what is wrong with that? I am about my money and I am doing what most men do at this age anyway. Don't judge me negatively based on my achievements.

There was a knock at my door and next thing I knew Samuel was standing before me with his arms crossed.

"What can I do for you Sam." I said polietly.
