Ellie walked home from school in the rain for the third time this week. She was sick of the weather, everyone was.
When she opened the door she expected the cheerful 'hello' from her mother but instead was greeted by silence. It was strange her mother was usually home by now. So Ellie just went into the bathroom wearing her soaking clothes and wet school bag, she then took a pair of scissors from her pencil case and lifted it too her face. She cut her hair. She cut her hair short. She cut the hair that used to go down to her hips so it matched the length of her face. Then she laughed. Like a crazy woman, she laughed at the fact she had just got rid of the only thing she liked about herself. She hated her boring big brown eyes, her colourless lips that were too big for her face, her ears that were too small for her head. Even her earrings wear crooked because she squirmed too much when she got them done. Ellie remembered that day, her mother said she would look pretty with them. So she agreed, only because she had seen a girl younger than her get some put in. Ellie climbed up on the chair and was shocked by the pain before screaming the whole shop down.
It was safe to say that Ellie's mother annoyed her. Her father always said she looked like her mother, Ellie would always argue until her face went blue.
At that time her mother came home with her little brother Carl.
"Ellie, sweetie, you home?" Said her mother's whiny voice.
"Yes," she groaned back, only to realise that she now got to see her mother's face when she got a look at her new haircut. She walked out into the kitchen where her mother was putting away groceries.
"Did you have any homework..." She began before looking up at Ellie. "What have you done to yourself!" She screeched. Ellie grinned. Then walked over to put some biscuits away in the pantry.
"Just thought I'd try something new, momma."
She felt a cold hand touch the back of her neck.
"Did you do this yourself?" Her mother asked, still gob-smacked.
"Is it good?" Ellie smirked, "maybe I should be a beautician?"
"Don't you be a smart-ass with me young lady!" He mother pointed a finger at her sternly.
Ellie rolled her eyes and looked at her shoes.
"You look me in the eye and tell me why you did this to yourself?" Her mother snapped.
"Why does it matter?"
"Because it was a very silly thing to do!" Her mother raised her voice then looked over to Carl's bedroom. Then hissed at her, "Is this because of your father?"
Ellie scowled at her. Her father had been in a coma for over a month now, and already her remaining family was falling apart. He had been shot on the job, he was a cop. He had always reminded her of the dangers of his job, though nothing too serious had ever happened. Until then at least.
Ellie loved her dad, always did. He was much more caring then her mother. Carl looked like him, with his dull blue eyes and dark hair. Ellie wished she did, she was told that she had his personality but her mothers temper. She hated people saying that too. She would never want to be a bitch like her mother.
"Stop bringing him up," Ellie said quietly.
"Well stop using him as an excuse for your-"
"How can you say that? I would never use him as an excuse!" Ellie cut in.
"I didn't mean it that way, honey, all I meant was-"
"What? That I am being difficult and it's all because I have a comatose dad?"
