Prom, one of the most waited nights of high school. It is where all the memories of being a junior and a senior are remembered. Prom happens to give all the girls butterflies in their stomach when their crush asks them to be their date. It also happens to give guys an opportunity and a chance to finally confess to the girl they like. Many things happen in that one magical night, confessions, slow dances, opportunities, fun and surprises.
It was only November when all the guys at school get hyped up for the incoming Junior-Senior turnover ceremony otherwise known as Prom. Some guys would use those cheesy strategies just to get the yes that they want from the girl whom he wishes to be his partner.
At that time, I would often ask myself if someone would even bother to ask me since I’m not one of the popular crowds in school. I would often tell myself that if no one asks me, then I’d be the one to ask. I have no problem with that.
I wanted to ask one of my closest friends in school. He was the only one whom I could think of. Night of the 28th of November, I was on the phone with him. We were talking about random stuff when I suddenly felt like asking him to prom. I was so desperate because I really want him to be my date.I texted him saying,
“May tatanong ako sayo, wag ka magagalit ha?”
I waited for his reply. After a few minutes, my phone vibrated.
“Ayan ka na naman. Nakakatakot ka pag may itatanong ka eh. Pero sige, ano ba yun? ”
I was so nervous. It took me minutes before I can send my very long message to him.
“Teka lang, kinakabahan ako. Hahaha. Wait. Okay uhm, kasi ayos lang ba sayo na tayo na lang magpartner sa prom? I mean, as close friends. Okay lang kung ayaw mo. Hindi naman kita pinipilit eh. Hahahaha”
There, I sent it. He wasn’t replying. I’m really nervous. I don’t know what to think. I was starting to panic. I didn’t know that replying to that message was like waiting for snow to come here in the Philippines. I was about to text him to just forget about it when my phone suddenly vibrated. It was his reply. My hands were shaking as I was opening his message. My jaw dropped and I suddenly felt my face heat up.
A huge smile was on my face.
“Ano ka ba? Bakit mo ako inuunahan? Gusto ko ako magtatanong sayo. Gagawin ko na nga bukas eh.”
That was his text. Wow. Just wow. I couldn’t believe it. I went out of my room went downstairs to our kitchen, drank some water and went back upstairs and replied to him.
“Seryoso ka ba? Sorry naman. Hahahaha. Hindi ko naman alam eh. Hahaha. So paano yan? Partners na tayo?”
The smile on my face just wouldn’t fade. He then replied again
“Eh kasi pinag iisipan ko pa nung una tapos nung okay na, inunahan mo naman ako. Oo, partners na tayo. Hahaha. Nakakatawa ka talaga.”
I didn’t reply at his text anymore. I slept with a smile on my face and butterflies in my stomach.
The next day, November 29, we met at school. At first, it was really awkward. We were seatmates. I didn’t know how to talk to him. I don’t I was just so happy. Then at lunch break, I was with him and another friend of ours. He told us that he would just go to the comfort room and we’ll just meet him later.
We parted, my friend and I went to the Computer room while he went to the C.R. Minutes later, my friend and I went back to our classroom. I went to the locker area to fix my things when suddenly someone stood beside me. I looked at that direction and saw him standing beside me.
“Hi.” I told him.
“Ano, uhm yung kagabi. Gusto ko kasi ako yung magtatanong sayo kaya eto na. uhm. Will you be my prom date?”
There go the butterflies again. I just couldn’t help but smile and stare at him. Before I could even tell him my answer, his friend started to pull him away from me for they have a practice for a dance competition. He immediately shouted at his friend telling him to wait and he came back to me asking for my answer. I just smiled and nodded.
A month had past he asked me what the color of my gown was so that we could wear a matching outfit. I told him it was a royal blue gown.
And then there goes the prom night. February 10, 2012. I arrived at the hotel first. I was with some of my batch mates when I received a text from him. He was asking me if I was already at the hotel. I told him that I am and he text back telling me to wait for him he’s just minutes away.
After 30 minutes, I saw him. I was really mesmerized. He was so handsome wearing those royal blue long sleeves with the black tux. He handed me my corsage. It was an orchid with blue ribbons. We entered the ballroom as soon as it opened. We were dancing and taking pictures the whole night.
He was my first and last dance. Nothing could go wrong I thought. I’m contented and happy that I had the chance to be with him for the whole night. I’m contented that I can say that just for one night he is my date.
