A. Definition of Physical Security
Is the system of barriers placed between the potential intruder and the matter to be protected.
B. Principle of Physical Security
a. The enemy agent must have access to the matter to be protected in order to accomplish his mission. The type of access necessary will depend upon a number of variable factors and therefore may be achieved in a number of different ways.
b.The saboteur need not physically place the destructive device or material at the place where it is to do its damage. He may propel an explosive to its target in a variety of ways.
c. There is no impenetrable barrier. Therefore security must be built upon a system of defense in depth or accumulated delay time.
C. Types of Barriers
1. Natural Barrier- those natural features such as rivers, cliffs, ravines and other, that delay or make more difficult the entry of the intruder.
2. Structural Barriers- are features constructed by men that tend to delay the intruder whether or not constructed with that specific purpose in mind.
3. Human Barriers – is human being used in providing security or partially providing a guarding system. These includes guards, office and shop workers who stand between the intruder and the matter to be protected.
4. Animal Barriers- An animal barrier is animal used in partially providing a guarding system although many types of animals could be employed most of the time dogs are utilized. These also includes geese and doves.
5. Energy Barriers –is the employment of mechanical, electrical, electronic energy to impose a deterrent to entry by the potential intruder or to provide advertisement of his presence.
6. Protective Lighting – is used to increase the effectiveness of the guard by increasing the guard’s visual range during the hours of darkness or in location where natural lighting does not reach or is insufficient to provide the desired visibility.
7. Protective Alarm System – it provides alarm system of detecting and announcing proximity intrusion which endangers or may endanger the security of an installation.
D. Application of Physical Security
The ultimate purpose of physical security is to provide the necessary security to an installation or facility.
D. Concept of Physical Security 1. Access – The unfriendly agent to succeed in his mission to gather information or to get the material being protected must have access to these matters: a. Use of line of sight access with the use of photo long focus lenses. b. Hearing Distance – Information could be gathered by agents through careless conversation of classified matters by the use of wall hearing devices or by direct hearing. c. Breakage or elimination of barriers to gain access to the matter itself.
