NB. The beginning of this is set when the Volturi come for Renesmee and Bella uses her sheild to protect everyone. All rights to Stephanie Meyer.
Bella could see Jane's powers slithering towards them, preparing itself to inflict pain upon her family. She stretched the metaphorical bubble that she used as a shield as far as it would go, but it wasn't enough. Only if Bella sent it behind her could she protect everyone from the danger they were in. And so she did, leaving herself exposed to the horrors that Jane's powers contained.
"Bella, what-" Edward started forward but was met by the invisible barrier of her will-power. "Bella, Bella!" They could all sense it now, the evil which was nearing them. "Bella, stop this." He hit his fist against the invisible wall but couldn't get past it. "Bella! He shouted and it took all of her might to not drop the shield and hold him close to her, to take away the fear.
"What is she doing?" Carlisle hurried over sounded both amazed and terrified, very much aware of Aro's watchful eye.
"Bella's put the protection around us but not around herself. They're going to kill her! Bella!"
"Bella, listen carefully." Carlisle said. "Because of the amount of force it's taken for you to keep us safe, you're no longer protecting yourself and you will be affected by Jane's powers."
"It's okay."
"It's not okay!" Edward nearly screamed in frustration. He pounded at her shield which was keeping him both safe and a prisoner.
"I do love a good self-sacrifice." Aro commented.
"Stop it!" Edward sounded broken. "If you hurt her," he pointed at Jane now and growled "If you hurt my wife I'll-"
"What will you do Edward?" Aro looked genuinely curious. "The law must be upheld and examples have to be set."
"Bella," Edward whispered, kneeling down in the pure snow as close as he could get to his Bella without hitting the shield. "Bella, love, listen to me, please. I'm begging you, don't do this. Put the shield down."
"I have to protect Renesmee." Out of the corner of her eye Bella saw Aro nod at Jane.
"Bella." Edward growled. "Don't do this. Don't you dare-" Bell felt it, the sudden blaze within her worse than when she felt vampire venom corse through her veins for the first time or even when she gave birth to Renesmee. This kind of pain was the kind which made your brain pound within your temples and your organs twist within your body. Bella couldn't help, she tried not to but she had to scream out in pain.
"Bella! Bella! Bella!" Edward repeated over and over again, each time with more force, trying to push through the barrier. Bella didn't know how much longer she could stand the torture. She was withering in the snow hearing the occasional voice trying to command people to get through the shield to her but it didn't work. Bella knew that for as long as she lived she wouldn't give up.
"Bella." She heard Edwards distant voice in the back of her mind as she internally battled. It sounded as though he was crying even though that was meant to be impossible for vampires. At some point she thought she heard Alice telling Aro what would happen if things continued and then the pain stopped, but only for a moment. For some reason it was still there, lingering within, and she groaned which was all she could manage. The Volturi were going so why wasn't the fire within? She dropped the shield in exhaustion.
"You son of a bitch!" Edward spat and went for them, but Emmet and Jasper held the back.
"Don't start another war," Jasper said. "Bella needs you." Bella tried to gasp for air and control herself but she couldn't. It was too much. Her whole body jerked and spasmed as Carlisle tried to examine her.
"Mummy?"
"Take Renesmee home." Someone said. Bella tried to say no but it came out as a strangled cry. She lay in a crippled heap as Carlisle tried to examine her.
"It's over Bella." Carlisle tried to sooth but it didn't feel over.
"Why's this happened?" Edward sounded hollow.
"No vampire had every stood Jane's powers for that long without perishing. We gave to get Bella home now." Strong arms tenderly picked her up but she still shrieked out in pain.
"Ssh, ssh." Edward whispered softly in her ear as he ran home with vampire speed. "You're okay, I'm so sorry. You're okay, I promise." Something cool mopped her brow but she was still burning up. "I love you." Were the last words Bella heard.
