When I said I wanted something interesting to happen, I did not expect a fire. The fire alarms are blaring throughout the school and are flashing brightly. No one knows what to do. One kid named Trevor stands up on his desk and starts screaming "FIRE!" Like we didn't already know. Someone chucks a ball of crumpled paper at his head, causing him to lose his balance and fall over. Everyone laughs, but Mrs. Filmore is not pleased.
"Everybody shut up and line up single file," She yells. Everyone is slow and seem to forget that there is a fire in the school. Fires have always made me uneasy, so I quickly make it to the back of the line. We open the classroom door and see complete chaos. Kids are screaming and running everywhere. Our class decides it's a good idea to join in and start sprinting out of the class. Mrs. Filmore couldn't care less. When I finally make it out of the building I am hit by a wave of heat. It turns out the fire was right outside of the building right next to the exit. How lovely... No one else seems to care. I see a crowd of popular girls keeping their distance from the fire and gossipping like nothing is happening.
I feel my skin begin to tingle and I look down. I see steam beginning to come from my skin. I panic and swiftly walk in the other direction, trying to not be noticed. I can't help but feel that this has something to do with my connection with water. I spot a dumpster around the corner and run behind it. Just as I make it to the dumpster, I notice another girl hiding behind it. I am about to turn around but she notices me. We stare at each other for a couple of seconds. Then she glares at me. I freeze and begin to get nervous. She notices and stops glaring.
"Who are you?
"Oh, uhhhmmm, I'm Brooke Wells," I say quickly. "Uhhh, what's your name?"
"Oh, no. I know your name. I want to know more what you are- because there's steam coming off of your hand.
"Huh?" I look down and see my hand is still steaming. "Oh! I singed my sweater on the fire!" What a stupid excuse, I tell myself.
"Sure you did. I'm Katie Skye, anyways. Not surprised that you don't know who I am."
"Well, I mean, I don't normally go to dumpsters," I say awkwardly. Katie glares at me and I feel a gentle gust of wind. The wind begins to get stronger and stronger and I have to hold onto the dumpster (my one and only love) for support. Katie breaks her gaze and looks nervously at me. "Woah, that was weird, that gust of wind just came out of nowhere."
"Yep, that happens sometimes." Just then another girl comes from around the corner cursing under her breath. She pauses when she sees us. She has dark brown hair which fades into a bright orangey-red at the tips. She curses again and is about to turn around but I call out to her.
"Hi! What's your name?"
"Uh, my name is Kiera," She seems rushed and very flustered.
"Oh, I'm Brooke Wells. Are you new here? I've never seen you here before." The orange tips from Kiera's hair began to fade away to her normal hair color and I couldn't help but stare. She quickly flipped her hair behind her shoulder and pretended to pay no attention to it.
"Uh yeah I'm new here," her glance turns to Katie and I look too. She looks like she is about to fall asleep or something. I hear the fire alarms shut off and everyone is conversing again. I guess the firemen did their job.
"Well, it was nice meeting you guys," I say, and begin to walk back to the school. Little did I know, my life would never be the same after meeting these two new girls.
