You can't run away from me

Forget

I walked outside my apartment and took the elevator down to the ground floor. I walked out and felt a breeze. I stood on the sidewalk, scrolling through my phone. I heard a honk and looked up to see Alex's car. I put my phone in my pocket and got into her car. I wanted to just say everything that just happened but I decided to wait till we got to her apartment. The drive was short and we finally got to her apartment. Her apartment was a bit bigger than mine and of course, cleaner than mine too.

"Sooo, what happened," Alex asked when we settled down in her living room with coffee for me and tea for her. I explained everything from me first getting home to me finding the note. "I don't know who did it," I let out a sigh.
"Maybe you have a secret admirer," She said giving me a smirk.
"Come on Alex, I would not have a secret admirer." I shook my head at her. "Even if it was a secret admirer, how would they get into my room."

She paused for a second, thinking. "Oh, I know! Maybe they asked the people at the front desk to put it in there." I thought about that but the staff there never went in any of the tenant's room. "But-"
"No buts Violet, don't worry yourself too much, it's probably nothing." She said getting off the couch. "Do you want any more coffee?"
"No, I'm fine. Your probably right though, I'll try and ask the front desk if they delivered that envelope to my room." In the back of my mind, I knew that wasn't true. The landlord never went or sent anyone into people's room for privacy reasons.
I decided to just let it go, for now.

"Hey we should get some breakfast, I'm starving," I said smiling at Alex. "Sure, let me get ready first, just watch some tv, I'll be back in a bit," Alex left the room most likely to go take a shower.
I turned the tv on and started watching some cartoons.

Alex's POV
I got into my room and quickly grabbed my cellphone. I locked my bedroom door and went into the bathroom. I turned the shower on so Violet thought I was in the shower. I dialed a number and waited for him to pick up.
"Hello?" a young man's voice answered. "I did it, I convince her that it was nothing," I said in a trembling voice. "Now can you please let my mother go, please," I was on the verge of tears.
"Not yet, I still need you to distract her, if you succeed I'll let your mother go. If you don't succeed, your mother will be dead, and so will you." I was shaking at this point. This man was torturing me. He made me betray my best friend, and he took my mother hostage."
"Why, why are you doing this?" "Because sweetie, I love Violet but I can't let her know about me right now. If you dare to tell her about me you mine as well say goodbye to your mother," He let out a twisted laugh. He had me completely wrapped around his finger and he knew it. "Okay, I understand. I'm hanging up now."

I ended the call and just washed my hair in the shower to act like I was in the shower this whole time. I hurriedly dried my hair and curled it. I then put on a little makeup and changed into some fresh clothing. I hated doing this to my best friend. I was betraying her but I'm so scared. I can't let him hurt my mother. She is the only one that ever cared for me but so has Violet. I don't know what to do.

Violet's POV
I heard the bedroom door open and Alex walked out. "Well that took a long time," I said as I turned off the tv. "Sorry," Alex said while letting out a nervous laugh. I could tell she was tense but I didn't know why. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" I asked. "Yeah, yeah I'm fine. Let's go get our breakfast," She grabbed her purse and phone and started walking towards the door. Something was definitely wrong with her but I decided not to push it. I grabbed my phone and purse and walked out the door with her. We got into her car and headed to a restaurant.
We were then seated into a booth and waited for a waiter to come take our order as we already knew what we wanted.

"So how has your mom been?" I asked. I saw Alex tense up even more. "Sh-She's fine, she's just been very busy with work,"
"Aw really, we should take her out to lunch soon, get her out of the house for a bit and let her relax," I suggested.
"Ye-yeah we should," She stuttered. What is wrong with her? She never acts like this. I opened my mouth to ask her what was wrong but just then the waiter came and asked what we wanted to order. "We'd like two blueberry pancakes each and two coffees," She ordered. The waiter wrote down our order and left.
"Alex, are you sure you okay? You seem so tense." I asked with a worried look. "Yeah I'm fine, I was just thinking about school and the exams in my classes."

"Okay, just remember that you can always tell me if something is wrong," I said grabbing her hand and giving her a small smile. A look of guilt flashed by in her eyes. "Yes I know, and I'll do the same for you."

The waiter came back with our coffee and pancakes. We ate in comfortable silence. Then I heard my phone ring. I picked it up and saw that it was my mom. I answered, "Hey mom, how have you been?" I asked. I hardly got to talk to my mom as she was always busy and I was too. "I'm doing great sweetie, how about you?" My mom said in her soft voice that I remembered back when I was little. She always used that voice to calm me down whenever I was feeling down. "I'm fine, I'm just eating breakfast with Alex."

"Oh, speaking of Alex, I haven't heard from her mom in a while, we made a plan to have dinner at my house but she never showed up and I haven't heard anything from her," That surprised me, Alex's mom was never really someone who would be late to anything. She was always on time and when she couldn't come she would call. "Well, Alex said that she's been very busy with her job, maybe it's just that."

"Yeah, I guess so. Just tell Alex to ask her mom to give me a call so I know she's okay." My mom said in a worried tone. "Okay I will, I'll talk to you later mom, I love you."
"I love you too,"
