You checked Line first thing when you came home to see if Ushijima was online, but to your disappointment, he wasn't. It was still a few hours before your arranged time, so you took your time to eat dinner and looked at the first part of your travel guide.
By reading the general information part of the guide, you were reminded of the fact that it was quite a few hours later in Japan than it was in your country. So while your session yesterday had been at night for you, it must have been early in the morning for him. You decided that this was a perfect excuse for you not to try to change your habit of going to sleep way too late. It seems you were destined to be a night owl.
A sound effect of your favorite game signified you had gotten a message on your phone.
'Are you going to chat with him tonight?'
It was from Marie. You replied, smiling. 'Yes.'
'Ask him for a picture! 😜'
'No! What if he's actually an ugly old man? 😣'
'No way, he's a hot young businessman looking for a foreign wife! 😍😍'
'He might as well be an old fat farmer looking for a foreign cow.. 🤪'
'Farmers can be handsome too! 😆'
'G2g he logged on!'
'Good luck!! 👍 Show me pics later! 😝😝'
You sighed. It seemed Marie's mind was geared to one thing and one thing alone: guys. For you however, it didn't really matter who your talking companion was, as long as there was someone. If they were male or female, old or young, handsome or ugly didn't matter as much as opposed to if they were a decent person and fun to have conversations with.
Not that Ushijima fit that bill at the moment... But as Marie had said, you hoped he would have more to say once he learned a bit of English.
You opened Line on your laptop and typed a greeting to him in English. That was 'your' subject for today, meeting someone in English and a few more basic things.
When you had explained a few things about introducing yourself and given him some examples, you asked him to introduce himself.
"Can you introduce yourself to me with your name, age, and where you are from?"
"I'm Ushijima Wakatoshi, 20 years old, from Sendai."
Not an old farmer then.
"That's a start, but it would be nice if you used a bit more words. For example: 'Hi, I'm Ushijima Wakatoshi. I come from Sendai and I'm 20 years old. Nice to meet you.' "
---
You spent most of your evenings for the next 2 weeks teaching the topics in your travel guide, often staying up until 1 or 2 a.m.
When you made example sentences you made up information like names, places, numbers,... You could still not fully trust this random internet person. He could be anyone.
He always used the same name though, so either he was pretending to be a person called Ushijima or it was actually his real name, and all the other info he had given you was real as well.
If the latter was indeed the case you had already learned quite a bit about him. Ushijima Wakatoshi, 20, lives in Sendai, likes to eat something called 'hayashi rice', attends university, hobby volleyball.
Marie was confident that you had met your soulmate. That somehow destiny had made you find each other online and you two were connected by a red string of fate. To say nothing of the hardships and drama of a 'long-distance relationship'.
She seemed to be more invested in your love life than her own. In the meanwhile, you and your 'soulmate' were quite literally talking about the weather. Or at least, you were teaching him how to talk about the weather.
Aside from the boy talk, you had great conversations with Marie. You had found someone to talk to about your interests, that was actually a first!
One evening, after you had had dinner and a shower, you were chatting with Marie on Line (you had convinced her to start using it as well) in your pajamas, sipping from a mug of hot chocolate when Ushijima came online.
You greeted him and already grabbed your travel guide to get on with your lessons when he sent you an unexpected message.
"My friend says my speech 'sucks'. "
"Oh?" Was all you managed to reply to that.
"Help, please."
... At least he'd learned to say please.
You knew that the only way you would be able to help him was if you could actually hear him and he you, but that was a big step to take. You had almost asked Marie for advice, but you could already imagine her reaction.
"I can't help you through chat. Do you have a mic?" 'Please say no, please say no!'
"Yes." 'Ugh'
You reached for your headset on the coffee table and plugged it in, nervously.
"If you want you can call me and I'll help you with your pronunciation."
You nervously tapped your fingers on your knee, waiting to see if he would answer. Then suddenly an unfamiliar ringtone sounded through your headset and you took a moment to realize that he was actually calling you right at that moment.
Panicking you scrambled to press the 'accept video call' button and held your breath.
'Wait a minute...'
'Accept video call?!'
