Prologue:

So many faces I see, they all pass me by, they become nothing but a blur. They call themselves friends, but do they really know each other? No. They’re just strangers who only scratch the surface, never bothering to really get to know each other, to find out what truly drives a person. Their deepest conversations are about their plans for the weekend, who’s dating who, and what’s the latest celebrity gossip. But they don’t know the dirt, the dark muck that we all try to hide. We keep it bottled up inside ourselves, because if we showed people the darkness inside ourselves they would be disgusted and turn away. No, I cannot show my inner darkness, so I sit here and wait for someone to join me in this eternal night.

Chapter One

I walk quickly through the halls, keeping my head down, trying to get to class as quickly as possible. Smack!  I look up into the startled face of a girl, who looks to be about my age. I don’t recognize her, but then again I don’t make a habit of studying the faces of my classmates. “I am so sorry! Are you okay?” she blurted out. I mumbled that I was fine and continued down the hall at the same brisk pace.

“Hey wait!” I could hear her calling after me, but I wasn’t about to slow down. I made it to my classroom and gratefully sank into my seat. I made sure to sit in the back corner, right beside the window, which is where I sat every day. I pulled out my worn notebook, and let out a small cry. The middle section of my notebook had fallen out, probably when I bumped into that girl.

I was so anxious that I missed most of the English class, which put me in a very bad mood. What did she even look like anyway? All I remember is a bright flash of green, which must have been her eyes, and a mess of brown hair.
