Prologue
I bit my lower lip as I waited for my boss to say something, anything. His narrow gold eyes scanned the report from my last mission, a look of hatred becoming more and more evident by the second. I nervously fingered the knife that was hidden under my leather jacket. I wasn't going to use it, it was just a habit of mine I picked up throughout my line of work. What do I do you ask? Well, I'm an assassin (the top assassin really) for a hidden government agency. We answered to no one, save for the president himself, and we did what no one was willing to do. We removed, infiltrated, and saved any supernatural creatures that either wanted to integrate or destroy society as we knew it. We had no official name, merely going by "The Crew". Lame, I know, but I didn't come up with it. No one and everyone knew about us. Humans had no clue of our existence, but everything else did.
"Uh...Sir?" I asked softly, hoping to god he wasn't going to fire me. This job was all that I had left. I had no house, no training in any other profession, and no hope for a future if I was fired. "If you want I can come back later?" I gulped as he trained that unwavering gaze on me. His pale skin, golden eyes, lean muscular frame, and the dead look in his eyes would fool anyone into thinking he was a vampire. But I knew better, he aged like any other human (albeit gracefully)and the signs were there, even if they weren't highly noticeable.
"Ilene....are you aware that you've cost the agency over one million dollars?" He asked coldly, his long slender fingers tapping on his desk. I felt my eye twitch as the tapping persisted. "You are no doubt singlehandedly sending the agency into bankruptcy! If you weren't as skilled as you are, I would fire you on the spot!" His baritone voice growled at me as I tried not to have a mini heart attack. "But since you are as good as you are, I have something else in mind for you." He smiled at me, and I paled, ready to drop into a dead faint.
You may be asking yourself why I'm freaking out so bad considering that he's not going to fire me, right? Perhaps I should explain...this man that sat in front of me was well known for some of his more....scarier moods. A smile for him was practically a death sentence for me. I once knew a girl that was fired for having a tiny ass bloodstain on her shit. This man had also been responsible for the last time I had been left to rot in some god forsaken jungle...which reminds me, I'm still pissed over that! But I digress, that's not the point. This man was painfully OCD and had more power over me than I had over myself. Not to mention it's two weeks before Christmas and my little sister would definitely kill me if I skipped out this year, like I had the last two.
"Uh...Sir? Christmas is in less than two weeks and I had promised Katie I would be home this year..." I said softly, praying to the heavens above that he wouldn't strike me down right there.
"Too bad!" he snapped at me, causing me to flinch. I was going to die and I knew it. You might as well stick a spoon in me, I'm done. I had to fight back somehow though...my sister was scarier than he was, even though she was only sixteen. "Now then, shut your trap and sit down" he commanded me. I turned to sit down and bit my lip to suppress my laughter. This man may have been a notorious penny pincher, but did he really have to drag out the only chair in existence from the bronze age?
"If I fall through that, I'm blaming you!" I growled at him, trying to ease myself into the dinosaur without causing a crash to the floor. He shook his head, laughing quietly. I whimpered slightly, but chose to brave on. "Um...Julien...what are you planning to do to me?" I asked softly. He looked at me and smirked, further increasing my dread. Unfortunately, when I stiffened, I crashed straight to the floor. The smirk blew up into a full out laugh as I jumped up and started babbling about how it wasn't my fault and that I'd fix it.
"Oh hush Ilene. Your job is detailed in this folder. I eyed it with hatred, knowing that I wouldn't like whatever was in it. "But there is one other thing..." he coughed and I froze. He was nervous?! I started growling, knowing I was probably gonna kill my boss for whatever he was planning. "I know how you hate having partners, but you're getting one. And you won't be able to run him off like you did the last five" I snorted at that but decided to let him continue before I started screaming. "Get in here!" He called, and in walked the one thing I hated more than my boss.
"What do you want?!" I yelled. The cocky ass vampire of my nightmares, Nicolai Alvera. I spun and faced Julien. "No! Not just no, but HELLZ NO!!!!!!" I screamed at him. "You know I refuse to work with vampires! ANY vampires! And most especially THIS vampire!!!! You make me work with that slime bag and I'll personally make sure all of your files get reorganized and your clothes get stains all over them!" Nicolai smirked at me, so I rounded on him next, "And you! Get off of my planet! NOW! I am not a snack for you nor am I your little pet! If you don't resign from this mission, I will personally make sure you regret the day you were conceived by your parents!!!!"
"No can do baby cakes. We're in this together" he smiled at me and I resisted the urge to stuff my shoe in his mouth, but just barely. Instead I growled and turned onto my heel to leave the room...only to run smack into the door. As my vision clouded I saw Nicolai laugh at me and managed to utter the only thing I could think of:
"Go suck on bottled sunshine BABE, and keep your eyes off of my melons!"
