Marilyn was the perfect kid. She was a straight-A student all through high school. She had a GPA of 4.0 during her undergrad years. She's currently in med school, well on her way to becoming a surgeon.
"Her parents raised her well." She hears it often and she's happy when she does. They worked so hard and she's proud to make them look good.
They prepared her for everything. They studied with her to make sure she understands the material. They had rarely let her out with her friends.
"The world's too dangerous for you to be on your own."
They make all choices for her. When people asked her out, they would answer (usually no). When she had to make important decisions for school, her parents always made them.
"That way it's never you who makes mistakes. Just us."
She didn't mind. They made the decisions and she worked hard on whatever they chose.
Life was good...until now.
Nothing could have prepared her for this, no matter how hard her parents tried.
The masked person stands in the corner of the room.
"Well?" they say. "Who's it going to be? Your mom?"
Marilyn looks to her mom, who's sobbing. She stands on a platform, her hands tied behind her back and a rope tied around her neck. Once that platform goes out...
"Or your dad?"
Marilyn looks to her dad. He's tied up and sobbing too. One of those medicine masks is on his face, but Marilyn knows it won't be medicine he's given.
"Who will you save?"
How can she choose? Marilyn has never made an important decision in her life. And now it's the most important decision in her life and she can't choose. She can't even refer to the people who supported her most.
She closes her eyes and randomly points, making what she believes to be the first and biggest mistake in her life.
