LAS VEGAS
chapter iv.
❝ las vegas, baby! ❞.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
Juliette dreamt of him last night. And by him, no, it wasn't Boris. She dreamt of the rose trail he left in her bedroom, even after she never told him her address. She dreamt that he wasn't the way he was, that he wasn't ran over right after they finished yelling at each other in the middle of the street.
"Never talk to me again you abusive jackass!" Juliette yelled, hitting his chest though he felt nothing but the love he had for her.
"No, Chloe, look, we can work this out! I promise—"
"Leave me alone." Juliette couldn't see his face due to the tears from the fear that coursed through her veins.
"Please—"
"No! You've constantly gotten chances! I've let everything slide! You've hit me, yelled at me, you've stalked me! And now this?!"
"I didn't mean any harm—"Though he couldn't finish his sentence before she hit his chest again. He wanted to wipe the tears that were rolling off her cheeks, but he knew that would step a boundary—but when did he ever respect boundaries? Reaching to wipe the salty substance, she slapped his hand.
"Get away from me!" She yelled, pushing him back and making a run for it. Running—it seemed to be the only thing she was doing these days. The piercing scream is what stopped her. Juliette turned around, looking where she left the boy, seeing a stopped car and black shadows.
"Hello?" One of the shadows yelled, bending down to the second shadow. "Help! Somebody! He's dead!"Juliette's head shot up, accidentally whacking into Boris's in the process.
"Blyad'! Chto za chert!" Boris exclaimed, immediately rubbing the part Juliette hit. She sat wide eyed, feeling numb for a second but the pain quickly stabbed her. She just realized her head was laying in Boris's lap; oh god, Juliette thought. "Ow..." Boris muttered before continuing his sentence, "Malyshka you okay?"
Juliette caught her breath, letting the dream fall from her memories. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." She let her head rest back in Boris's lap, his fingers writhing themselves in her tangerine locks."What'd you dream?" Boris asked, meeting her pale blue eyes.
"Home. People. Nothing much," Juliette partially lied, watching Boris as he softly nodded his head. "How much time until we're there?"
Boris looked ahead at the board the bus had, it had 18 tally marks. "Two hours to go." Juliette nodded, turning her eyes away and let herself calm down from the dream.Juliette wondered what it would be like if she knew Boris before this. Friends? Sure, in her utopia her and Boris were friends, who only called each other at 5:30 for attention. A part of her knew that's what they would end up as if they got closer; nothing but unstable people leaning on each other. There was no way Juliette could go through another toxic relationship.
Two hours. Two more hours until they would never see each other again. Two hours until Boris would meet with his girlfriend. And two more hours until Juliette finally got the ending she wanted.
Juliette could never forget the newspaper her mother gave her that morning. "Jules? Isn't that the guy you were seeing?"
She wanted to tell her mom, "No, he was seeing me." But she couldn't, there was no way she could tell her Mom that she was being stalked by a boy that was now dead.
"Shame that he died."
"Yeah ..." Juliette muttered. She wanted to scream "he deserved it! he deserved it!" but there was no point, nobody ever listened to her anyways."Malyshka," Boris's voice rung. She was spacing out, she knew it. But how could she not? He was trapped in her mind like a prisoner and sadly, his jail time wasn't up yet.
"Hm?"
"What are you going to do? Y'know? Once you get off bus?"Juliette knew what he was trying to say: do you want to stay with me once we're at Las Vegas? She so desperately wanted to but she couldn't. He had a girlfriend and she had her priorities of her family. Was she going to say that she planned on never seeing him again? No.
"I don't know—"
Though Juliette had no time to finish before the driver spoke, "Entering Las Vegas!" She smiled; she could smell the money that was soon going to be in her hands already. Juliette decided to ignore finishing Boris's question. Those two hours were up and both of them couldn't be anymore nervous. The driver came to a quick halt at the first bus stop they could find, sending some passengers a bit forward.
Juliette zipped her backpack up and made sure she had everything she needed. All Boris did was return his favorite book, War and Peace, into the pocket of his black jacket and flip the sunglasses down to cover his eyes. People started to file off the bus, pushing one another like it was a race. Juliette sat and waited like any civil person would; why try and leave when everybody was squeezed between people like sandwiches? As more people passed and the stragglers left their seats, Juliette and Boris got up and made their way out.Juliette intended to go a completely different way than Boris, metaphorically and physically. Turning to her right, she didn't expect him to turn the same way as her.
"Malyshka! Where're you headed?"
Juliette turned around, facing him with a bright smile on her face. She didn't want to leave him, she just didn't want the toxicity that followed him.
"I don't know, maybe a hotel?""Hotel? C'mon, I can show you the city!"
"You've been here before!"
"Yeah, many, many times." Juliette agreed, letting him take her hand and pulling her to run with him.
"This city is beautiful," she whispered, though loud enough so he could here.
"Course it is! Is Las Vegas, baby!"Juliette admired the way he looked, the way he talked and the way he acted. His broken English, his mixed accents she never could put her finger on, the way his stringy (yet still very curly) hair bounced every time he laughed, the whole impulsiveness ways about himself and the way his eyes lit with joy and sadness; the way he was himself made her fall in love with him over and over again by each second.
And maybe that was the antagonist of their story: love.
