My mom must be crazy! Moving to Wisconsin in the middle of December! I'm from Colorado, so I'm used to cooling temps and snow; however, my sister has told me to brace myself for the cold temps in Wisconsin. She says that there are some nights that she has the heat on all night with extra blankets on her bed because it is so cold.
"This will be good for us Nova you'll see." My mother said to me as we sat at the gate waiting for our boarding number to be called.
The flight was long and the plane was cold and kinda cramped but otherwise, it was a nice flight. When we landed in Wisconsin I was astonished by the beauty that the snow brought to the landscape. The bare trees with a fresh covering of powder.
My sister came to get my mom and me from the airport. My dad's flight had gotten delayed due to bad weather in Denver.
When we got to the town where my sister lived I was awestruck by the beauty of the Christmas lights mixed with the freshly fallen snow. All the Christmas lights were already up and aglow down State Street. My sister was in the driver's seat and my mom was riding shotgun.
"So, Nova?" My sister glanced in the rearview mirror.
"Are you excited to be in Wisconsin? I know it's not home, but I'm sure within a few weeks you can make it home." I was so caught up in the beauty of the street that I hadn't realized A: she was talking to me, and B: that I was silently laughing to myself at the people in the streets waiting for the bus in the freezing cold.
"Hu? what, sorry." I had started to do a little research on Wisconsin. "I guess I'm kind of excited to be in Wisconsin, but I am going to miss all of my friends so much. Especially Jill." I wished that Jill could be here. It was so beautiful and she loves the snow! She would love it here. I pulled out my phone and texted Jill.
"Hey, Jill! How are you? I miss you so much already!! We just landed in Wisconsin and I'm on my way to my sister's house. You would love it here! The snow is amazing." I attached a picture of the beauty of State Street with the message and sent it.
Before I knew it we were at my sister's apartment. My mom helped my sister with the bags an I went inside and ended up falling asleep on the couch moments later.
I awoke the next morning in the second guest bedroom; which I must have been carried thereafter we arrived last night. My dad was standing in the doorway.
"Good morning Kitten." He said and opened the blinds in the guest room. I earned the nickname of kitten after the Halloween night of 2010. I rolled over and looked out the floor to ceiling window.
"WOW! That is amazing! What lake is that!" I exclaimed and grabbed my phone and snapped a picture of the frozen lake. It looked like something almost out of a storybook, but it was something more than that. It was like looking at a piece of shattered glass; it was almost as if kids had gone out and skated on it in the middle of the night. I got out of bed went downstairs for some breakfast.
"Morning Lil sis! How'd you sleep?" My sister asked as she put a plate of fresh pancakes, my favorite, in front of me.
"umm... Pretty good I guess despite that I was in a new place." I responded while stuffing my face with pancakes.
After breakfast, we were off to the ski slopes. I love to ski! We had a cabin in Colorado and we would always go up for Christmas break. The slopes are stellar! The chair lift swayed ever so slightly up the mountain. As I looked down over the majestic peaks I couldn't think of anywhere better to be. I jumped off the lift and started down the slope. The powder was fantastic, the wind blowing in my face making my cheeks a pinkish color. It was the most magnificent place I had ever seen! Maybe it wasn't Colorado but I definitely could be made into my new home.
