Prologue.
Years ago, a meteorite landed on the earth. As it entered the atmosphere the fire vreated by the momentum only enhanced what it would do. It crashed somewhere in the middle of the pacific ocean, breaking into thousands of pieces on impact. These pieces contained the gems. The gems, we later discovered did amazing things to humans. If a person's mind and body are attuned to it that is. It's a lot of metaphysical stuff even we don't fully understand. The centuries went on after the crash and ancient records show people all of the world capable of things that should be impossible. Manipulation of the elements, psychic abilities, even teleportation, all through the power of these gems.
The people who posessed these abilities were called witches, warlocks, even demons due to the inability to be taught to use their powers. In some instances, even leading to tragic events. For example, Mrs. O'leary's cow didn't kick over that lamp, that was an adept by the name of Clive accidentally sttumbling on the ability to manipulate fire. The O'leary story was cooked up as a way to keep them hidden. The adepts that were outed were often persecuted or outright manipulated by people and even governments to do horrific things to other humans. They unfortunately were killed in fear of retaliation.
But, this story wouldn't be too interesting if it just ended there now would it? The adepts that weren't found out abandoned society. Living in caves or deep in forests, high above those that would persecute them. Some even used their powers to create a society underneath the many waves of the ocean. As the world tore itself down around them, they remained untouched. This story, however, focuses on one group of adepts. A clan of thieves who were descendants of a legendary thief. They used their abilities to steal not only the necessities of life, but countless other things for the clan's glory. They conducted themselves by a simple rule, Never to get involved in the affairs of others.
But sometimes... Rules need to be broken.
