Making the transition from being a mechanical or electrical engineer to a software engineer or from any kind to another kind is a tough one, but it is doable. If you are really dedicated, you can make it happen. You can forge your own path.

Be Willing To Move Laterally

The first step is to have the willingness to move. Learn the special considerations that an engineer must master in order to succeed in the field. Be prepared wholly for the change and admit that more challenges are on your way.

Take One Step Back, To Take Two Steps Forward

Although this move may sound rough, it works! While making a transition, you will be considered as a fresher. Don't hesitant in taking a job that has a lower pay level. You may have to do an unpaid internship for some time. However, after some time, you will land yourself in a job where your pay will be at par with industrial standards.

Meet People

Go to events, seminars, meetings and other such gatherings of your choice. The odds of job offer coming from a friend or an acquaintance are higher than applying blindly. Follow people you admire and join new communities that share the same interest as you. The more people you meet, the better!

Move

Like many career decisions, you will have to follow the work. You may not get a lot of opportunities in the city you are currently residing in. For example, you might have taken B.tech direct admission in a different city for a better opportunity. Similarly, for making the transition a success, you may have to move to another city. Being immersed in the desired community is the key to success.

Make It Personal

Design a personal project in your spare time. Figure out how to get a job done on your own. Try to solve a real problem of the domain you want to enter in. If you need extra motivation, keep a note of few tasks lined-up on your phone and think of the solutions in your free time. Once your personal project is ready, you can use it as a prototype to fetch a higher paying job.

Don't feel hopeless or stuck. Every time is the right time to start and things will get better after a while. All you need to do is follow the tips diligently and remind yourself that transition can happen. Be prepared for the bright future, mate!
