Preface
I didn’t remember much about whom I was before, but from what I had learned, it was better that I didn’t know. Every time I asked somebody who would know, my aunt, my uncle, my grandmother, my sister, they all stared at me as though I had murdered their great ancestor or committed adultery. They would give me that look and just say, “There’s nothing to tell you about it. Don’t ask again.”
How could I survive on that? How could I just live with not knowing who I was and who I came from? I couldn’t and I would sit in my bed most nights and drive myself crazy over it. I had to know and that’s why I went straight to the only person in town who would know: Belle. She knows everything, more than anybody here. It would be such a long journey to get to her, I was determined. I knew that my family might understand, considering as they’re only my adoptive family, no blood between us. I would do whatever it takes to figure out where I came from as long as I could, while I was still breathing and as long as they were being of no help to me.
My name is Maria and I will find where I came from, even if it kills me.
