Blaring sirens and cheers of congratulations echoed through the clear evening sky. The flashing red and yellow lights illuminated the blonde's joyful face, as she grinned, feeling a rare sense of accomplishment.
"Good job, Sammy!" The blonde looked to her friend, tilting her head up to meet their gaze. Her dark-skinned cheeks glowed with pride as she smiled down at her, and Sammy responded shakily, "T-Thanks Jas!"
"Yeah, Sam, nice job!" A petite, raven-haired female gave Sammy a side hug, her crimson feather earrings dangling off of her lobes.
Sammy smiled at both of the girls, her body trembling from happiness, with remnants of disbelief still lingering in her eyes. Finally, her last companion showed up in front of her, presenting her prize, a white stuffed rabbit.
The blonde eagerly took the rabbit and hugged it to her chest. She giggled, and looked straight at her messenger, "Thanks for grabbing it, Shawn."
Shawn, adjusting his faded green beanie and brushing the messy brown hair from his eyes, gave her a light smile and nod in return. He then approached the tall girl and she hugged him from the side.
Sammy nuzzled her face into the back of the bunny's head, her smile buried in the white fabric. Admittedly, she zoned out of the moment for a while.
She followed the others while they got cotton candy, sat around for a while at a bench and chatted, even trying out another carnival game. The blonde was too lost in the fact that she actually won something for herself, and that her sister wasn't going to take it from her or ruin the moment. She had faded into the bliss of the experience and sighed.
Eventually, from what she realized, they had begun walking again and were passing through the widespread crowds of the carnival. Blinking lights, the callings of the carnies urging participation blended into the background, it all merged together delightfully.
Until Sammy was ripped out of her peace by a tug at her arm.
"Hey, Sam, come here," Sky, the raven-haired female, said as she lightly drew Sammy to her side. The two of them caught up with Shawn and Jasmine, who had melded into a gathering crowd.
Sammy tilted her head curiously, holding her rabbit in one arm while linking the other with Sky. "What's going on?" "I don't know, but something about it drew in Sha-"
"Come on, come all, and prepare to witness sights beyond your mortal understanding!" The voice cut through the chatter of the crowd, and it sent an unnatural shiver down the blonde's spine. There was something off . . .
Her hold of Sky's arm tightened, and the other female took notice, sending her companion a wary look. Sammy brought her gaze back up to above the crowd, finally catching a glimpse of the voice's source.
The source, a man who seemed no further than his early thirties, barely presented himself as a man. He resembled an oxymoron of sorts. His hair was neatly combed, with strands hanging off the sides of his face. His suit looked formal but was messily thrown onto his body.
A top hat sat loosely upon his head, and a white mask, which barely passed off as white in color, covered the right half of his face. The man twirled a tanned brown walking cane around in the air and was screaming dramatically. The epitome of a classic carnie.
Said carnie continued his speech, his voice carrying high above the crowd's heads and roaring above the collective noise of the carnival.
"Come one, come all! The sickest sights of the century! The most disgustingly distinct who dare to distinguish themselves! Face these creatures, these ANIMALS, the subordinates of Satan that he dare release into our realm! Take a look inside 'La Ciudad de Los Malditos', the city of the damned!"
