(Your P.O.V.)

Tears blurred my vision slightly as I yawned. Glancing at the clock behind the counter, I noted, "11:24, just six more minutes."

Continuing to sweep the diner's floor, I dreaded cleaning behind the counter the most. It's where we serve pies to children with their parents out for a treat, and to the elderly. The dropped pie pieces make it sticky. Yet, I cherish my job here. Checking the time again, "11:30," I allowed myself a contented smile.

With the broom stored away, I clocked out and joined my coworkers in a booth where they had already gathered.

"Aah," I sighed, settling into my seat.

"Man, it was so damn busy," Isaac, our cook, whined.

"Well, I earned a lot of tips, so it was worth it," Charlie, my best friend and the most charming server here, remarked.

"Well, that's because your boobs are hanging out, this isn't a titty bar y'know?" said Garrett. He is our manager; he's only been with us for a few weeks, but he's already doing a great job.

"Jesus, you pervert!" Charlie yelled, while she pulled her shirt up, "I can't help it! They don't stop growing and it pisses me off how big they are! (Y/n)? Why can't I have average C-cup boobs like you?!"

"I can't tell if that was a compliment or an insult, Charlie," I said flatly.

"Alright, guys," Garrett announced, "thanks for the hard work. I know it's been a long shift. Go ahead and head home."

I slung my backpack over my shoulder, and we all rose and exited the diner. After Garrett secured the doors, he, Isaac, and Charlie headed to their cars in the lot, while I set off in the opposite direction. I waved as my coworkers drove past.

'Thank goodness I only live a couple of blocks away because it's incredibly late,' I thought to myself, 'and I have school tomorrow too.'

Seeking a shortcut home, I opted to cut through an alley. The ground was soft and damp from the recent rain.

"Meow! Meow!"

"There's a kitten here!" I exclaimed, retrieving my phone to use the flashlight. A full sweep of the area revealed the source of the cries. It was a kitten sporting a two-toned face; one side was a grayish silver, the other black, with a tuft of white fur on its chin and a black body.

This little thing is only around a couple months old and here it is, in small puddle, soaking wet, in an alley, in the damn near middle of the night.

"Oh my god!" I exclaimed. As I bent down, I extended my hand toward the wriggling kitten, and my fingertips grazed the water's surface. Suddenly, I lost my balance and began to fall. Instinctively, I stretched out my hands and shut my eyes. But instead of the anticipated impact with the ground, I felt the cold water envelop my body. I felt my weight sinking.

When I opened my eyes, all I could see was murky, green water surrounding me. Panic set in. I was drowning, clueless about how I ended up in the water. Desperately, I tried to swim towards the light above, but I couldn't move. I'm trapped! I'm going to die!

These were my last thoughts as the air escaped my lungs and my vision began to fade. I was oblivious to the arm that had encircled my waist.
