Chapter 1: New journey; Sour notes

"one, two,three,four..." We are our own family. All that's left of our towns and relatives some are here because of floods and fires, but most are here because of the Darkness. It’s a black, as night, cloud made of ashes. It absorbs towns and people whole, ounce it has you you’re gone. The orphanage we stay at is a small broken, and rundown, but it’s home. The rooms we sleep in are chipping with old grey paint. And just about everything that is not alive is dull. Pots and pans are dented and all the windows are broken some are boarded up. Marcie is the head nurse and takes care of all of us. Shes a stubborn old bat with greying red hair. She is strict too, but you had to lover her she had been through a lot and was very strong emotionally and physically. But I never thought I would miss that orphanage or the games we all played. “Seven, eight, nine, ten. Ready or not here I come.” Dakota started clumsily searching. I could hear my brother clashing and clanging as he would bump into pot seeking hiders.

“Hey! I was here first.” Came the whisper of my 13 year old enemy Xaviar.

“no you weren’t I was.” I  hissed back. And there we were arguing over a small hiding space. We started to yell then it escalated to pushing. All the other kids began to crowd around us excitedly waiting for some entertainment.  One punch that’s all it took and we were on the ground. Fighting. A loud bang echoed through the house everyone stopped. Daniel pulled Xaviar off of me and held me back.

“Xaviar, Nathaniel!” Spoke the sweet voice of my sister, Elizabeth, she was sixteen along with my brother Daniel. “ This is no way to behave at times like these. The Darkness,“ a dry pause filled the air before she continued, “ has taken everything; you two don’t need to be lost to us as well.”

“What the dickens is going on in here!” Came the shrill voice of Marcie as she entered the room;  her red hair with large streaks of steel grey pulled back into a tight bun lie always. Elizabeth was about to speak but the house began to shake suddenly and violently. Chairs, stools, pots and dishes tipped and fell. Everyone huddle together for safety hoping it to pass like an earthquake, but Marcie knew what it was. ”Run you damn kids Run!” But no one moved. The black mist came pouring in “the Darkness” she whispered as children were scattering and disappearing. My siblings, Xaviar and I were the closest to her. “ Elizabeth, Daniel, Dakota, Nathaniel, Xaviar; follow me. Now!” Marcie lead us to a room I had never seen before. Next a door appeared that lead to a rail road (outside) with a platform, that had wheels and sail. “Get on this should take you to Nasida, City of light. Be safe my darlings.” Once the last of us was on she gave us a push as the wind picked up and we began our journey. I looked back, I think I was the only one the mist was right behind her. Why hadn’t she got on? She yelled to us “Don’t stray from the path!” and before I knew it she was gone in the mist swallowed never to return. And we were off starting out journey off on a sour note.
