Looking out of the foggy cafe window, you could see the rain causing turmoil in the streets and people driving their cars recklessly. It was a surprisingly rainy night, and unusual for the humid and warm weather of California.
I set my now empty coffee mug down and look at my phone at a text message I had gotten the night before. My best friend Jade had gone on a blind date that had gone horribly wrong, and I was laughing at the details of her fake emergency call in order to get out of it.
It was getting late so I closed my laptop, grabbed my bag and umbrella, and headed outside, ready to fight through the rain. I got in my car and headed home, ready to tear my clothes off and change into some PJ's.
Once I got into my apartment building the smell of my black cherry merlot candle overwhelmed my senses. Such a comforting and sweet smell. I was out of the rain and ready to jump in bed when I get a call from Jade. I quickly get comfortable under my blankets and answer the call."Hey Jade! What's up?"
"Tell me why this always happens to me Eva? I am only trying to find a nice, respectable man who is honest and caring. Is that too much to ask for?" Jade sighs.
"No, that is not too much to ask for Jade. If anything, that is the bare minimum. I know how you feel. I do. You know I have gone through my own dating failures."
"Eva, I'm telling you, this guy was such a jerk! He asked why I was wearing so much makeup and I was so confused I just laughed in his face! As if I wore the makeup for him. The audacity this man had to be assuming," Jade laughs.
"Oh wow, there are still men out there that think everything is about them."
"Yeah well, we know I'm never seeing this guy ever again. I had to fake a family emergency and lied that my little brother fell off his skateboard and fractured his ankle so I had to take him to the hospital. I mean, that did happen. Just not that night."
"Oh no you didn't!" I yell. "That is hilarious!"
"Anyways, enough about my bad luck, how was your day girly. What have you been up to?"
"Well, it's been ok. Just working on a website I'm helping create for this small business that reached out, so I have been at the cafe most of the day. Time tends to sneak up on me so I literally left like 10 minutes ago and I just got home."
"That's so cool! I forget you do that sort of stuff. Which reminds me! Talking about designing, I bumped in to a certain someone before my blind date! I don't know why I didn't mention it earlier. Well, probably because I know you don't want to hear it but just a heads up, Mitch is in town," Jade rolls her eyes.
Oh no. Mitch is an ex-boyfriend of mine that I had met working for a marketing company. I had my longest relationship with this man. Two years to be exact. Everything seemed too good to be true before I realized he was only giving me false promises and expectations of a future that wasn't really going to happen. It was unfair of him to do such a thing. I understood that he wanted the future he described but was he really ready for it? No. He wasn't. I was. The more time passed, I realized not much was being done to fulfill this future together. A lot of talk but no action, and it was time to reassess what we had together. I didn't want to waste my time with someone that didn't know what they wanted. I deserved better than that. I have not seen or talked to Mitch in over two years and hearing that he was in town gave me anxiety. The last thing I want is to bump into him. However, I know it will be inevitable.
